Codificación Múltiple de las Causas de Muerte: de Morir «Por» a Morir «Con»

Abstract: Multiple-cause mortality data is examined in the Valencian Region. In addition to coding the underlying cause of death (UCD), all causes of death which appeared mentioned on death certificates (MCD) were coded according to preliminary rules established by the Mortality Statistics Office. Specific diseases were selected to explore mortality patterns. The average number of conditions coded per death certificate was 2.7. Two or more conditions on the lowest used line appeared in 33.8% of all medical certificates.… Show more

“…When reporting and aggregating cause of death statistics, usually only a single, underlying cause of death is given, even though most child deaths in developing countries are probably due to multiple causes, and identifying only a single cause of death can lead to misleading results (Chandramohan et al 1994). Therefore more attention has recently been given to analysing deaths by multiple cause, often described as death with, rather that death of (Garcia Benavides et al 1992;Marsh et al 1995). We allowed multiple causes of death in this study, with the effect that the CSF for each illness is generally much higher than where a single cause is assigned.…”

“…First, cause-specific death statistics in Spain include only the primary underlying cause of death ( 11 ), which omit possible contributions of other infectious causes and result in underestimation of deaths caused by infectious diseases, a finding that could be detected only by using multiple coding ( 28 ). Second, in 1998 Spain replaced ICD-9 with ICD-10, a decision that might have been led to problems of standardization of disease coding and discontinuity in assessment of trends.…”

“…Also included here were articles that aimed to evaluate cause-related mortality using rates based on any mention of a cause; that is, by counting each death that mentions the cause of interest anywhere on the death certificate. [18][19][20][21] Some evaluated the leading causes of death using any mention [22][23][24][25][26][27] to understand the most common causes involved in deaths. Assessment of temporal trends in rates based on any mention against rates based on the underlying cause was used to highlight changes in certification or coding practices and changing patterns of disease contribution to death.…”
