This paper proposes a distributed RS coding scheme which is comprised of two different ReedSolomon (RS) codes over fast Rayleigh fading channel. Practically in any distributed coding scheme, an appropriate encoding strategy at the relay plays a vital role in achieving an optimized code at the destination. Therefore, the authors have proposed an efficient approach for proper selection of information at the relay based on subspace approach. Using this approach as the proper benchmark, another more practical selection approach with low complexity is also proposed. Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate that the distributed RS coding scheme under the two approaches can achieve nearly the same bit error rate (BER) performance. Furthermore, to jointly decode the source and relay codes at the destination, two different decoding algorithms named as naive and smart algorithms are proposed. The simulation results reveal that the advantage of smart algorithm as compared to naive one. The proposed distributed RS coding scheme with smart algorithm outperforms its non-cooperative scheme by a gain of 2.4-3.2 dB under identical conditions. Moreover, the proposed distributed RS coding scheme outperforms multiple existing distributed coding schemes, making it an excellent candidate for the future distributed coding wireless communications.

The bit error rate (BER) performance of spatial modulation (SM) can be further improved by applying quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes recommended in 5G to SM. It motivates us to propose a QC-LDPC coded SM (QC-LDPCC-SM) scheme, where SM signals are protected by QC-LDPC codes. To estimate the channel state information at the receiver, a novel iterative joint channel estimation and data detection based on variable block length (IJCEDD-VBL) for SM is presented. In standard 5G LDPC codes, the parity-check matrix contains multiple submatrices, and then we can construct two different QC-LDPC codes by suitably selecting the submatrices. Thus, the QC-LDPCC-SM scheme can be effectively extended to cooperative scenarios when deploying the generated LDPC codes at the source and relay, respectively. We develop an analytical approach for the BER performance of the proposed schemes. The simulation and theoretical results are in good agreement at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Furthermore, the proposed coded cooperative scheme outperforms its corresponding non-cooperative counterpart and the existing scheme. The numerical results also validate the effectiveness of the proposed channel estimation scheme.

The capacity and mutual information of amplify and forward (AF) cooperative multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with direct link are studied and analyzed in this article. Specifically, the capacities of space modulation techniques (SMTs)-AF and spatial multiplexing (SMX)-AF cooperative systems are derived, and the conditions under which the capacity is accomplished are discussed and interpreted. The impact of varying system and channel parameters on the capacity is studied and discussed. As well, the impact of the presence or the absence of the direct link on the capacity performance is discussed. It is revealed that the capacity can be attained if the distribution of both direct and cooperative links follow complex Gaussian distribution. The capacity of SMTs-AF systems is shown to be higher than that of SMX-AF counterparts. As well, the capacity of SMTs-AF is shown to be independent of the fading channel distribution as the channel is a source of spatial symbols in SMTs. Additionally, it is disclosed that the capacity performance is significantly enhanced in the presence of the direct link and adding more AF relays enhances the performance.
