Coded Cooperation in Wireless Communications: Space-Time Transmission and Iterative Decoding

Abstract: Abstract-When mobiles cannot support multiple antennas due to size or other constraints, conventional space-time coding cannot be used to provide uplink transmit diversity. To address this limitation, the concept of cooperation diversity has been introduced, where mobiles achieve uplink transmit diversity by relaying each other's messages. A particularly powerful variation of this principle is coded cooperation. Instead of a simple repetition relay, coded cooperation partitions the codewords of each mobile and… Show more

“…To guarantee the success of cooperation, only the cooperative node that correctly decodes the received signals will become an active cooperative node to participate in the cooperative transmission in the second phase. A simple manner to do this is to use an error detection code such as cyclic redundancy check (CRC) in the source [10]. In the beginning of the second phase, the eligible cooperative nodes re-map the decoded information bits into symbols.…”

“…How to exploit the spatial benefits by wireless terminals with only single antenna becomes a natural question. Cooperative communications technology [7][8][9][10][11][12] may have provided an answer to this question.…”

“…Using this simple protocol a user still provides redundancy for its own without wasting resources by retransmitting erroneous data. CC can be easily combined with space-time coding schemes [12], which is discussed in detail in Section 2.3. A very informative tutorial on cooperative coding techniques is provided in reference [22] and detailed analyses of the common approaches are presented in references [11,14].…”
