The incorporation of natural lignocellulosic fibers as reinforcements in polymer composites has witnessed significant growth due to their biodegradability, cost-effectiveness, and mechanical properties. This study aims to evaluate castor-oil-based polyurethane (COPU), incorporating different contents of coconut coir fibers, 5, 10, and 15 wt%. The investigation includes analysis of the physical, mechanical, and microstructural properties of these composites. Additionally, this study evaluates the influence of hydrothermal treatment on the fibers, conducted at 120 °C and 98 kPa for 30 min, on the biocomposites’ properties. Both coir fibers (CFs) and hydrothermal-treated coir fibers (HTCFs) were subjected to comprehensive characterization, including lignocellulosic composition analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The biocomposites were subjected to water absorption analysis, bending tests, XRD, SEM, FTIR, and TGA. The results indicate that the 30 min hydrothermal treatment reduces the extractive content, enhancing the interfacial adhesion between the fiber and the matrix, as evidenced by SEM. Notably, the composite containing 5 wt% CF exhibits a reduced water absorption, approaching the level observed in pure COPU. The inclusion of 15 wt% HTCF results in a remarkable improvement in the composite’s flexural strength (100%), elastic modulus (98%), and toughness (280%) compared to neat COPU. TGA highlights that incorporating CFs into the COPU matrix enhances the material’s thermal stability, allowing it to withstand temperatures of up to 500 °C. These findings underscore the potential of CFs as a ductile, lightweight, and cost-effective reinforcement in COPU matrix biocomposites, particularly for engineering applications.

The coconut tree (Cocos nucifera) stands as a pivotal resource in tropical regions, playing a crucial role in both subsistence and economic activities across Asia, the Pacific Islands, and South America. While the harvesting of coconut fruit is essential for producing globally utilized edible products, such as coconut oil, by small owners and large producers around the world in the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries, concerns have arisen due to the substantial amount of agro-industrial residue generated in this process, posing environmental risks if they are not properly managed. Recognizing the environmental challenges, this paper emphasizes the transformative potential inherent in coconut waste, characterized by its lignocellulosic composition rich in lignin and multifunctional groups. By delving into the historical context of coconut economic exploration and its chemical composition, this review explores the diverse applications of coconut products, focusing on the utilization and processing of residues to generate sustainable products and byproducts. Ultimately, this comprehensive review underscores the significance of repurposing coconut waste, not only to mitigate the environmental impact but also as a valuable contributor to a circular economy, promoting the use of the lignocellulosic biomass in research and bolstering its role as a raw material in the chemical and energy sectors.

The influence of the combined addition of cellulose fibers (FC) and microcrystalline celluloses (MCC) on the fresh properties and hydration kinetics of cementitious composites was investigated. For this purpose, sixteen different formulations of FC-MCC celluloses in the cement matrix were analyzed, in which various cellulose fibers were 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5% and microcrystalline cellulose in 0.4%, 0.6% and 0.8% about the cement mass. The cementitious composites with the addition of FC-MCC celluloses were characterized in terms of rheological behavior, which was determined through the Squeeze flow method, fluidity through the mini-slump test, and hydration kinetics determined through the temporal evolution of the temperature of the mixtures. The initial hydration tests showed that the maximum addition of MCC (0.8%) used in this work reduced the maximum temperature of the cementitious composites, as well as the combination of FCs with MCC 0.8. Cellulose fibers took a longer time to reach the maximum temperature. The combined contents of FC 1.0-MCC 0.4 and FC 0.5-MCC 0.6 promoted an increase in the maximum temperature, which could indicate a dispersive effect of the cellulose particles with the cementitious system. The results of the compression flow showed that the studied samples presented a flow with very low loads and extended for a large part of the curve. Te increase in the amount of cellulose fiber alters the main phenomena related to flow: with a high cellulose content (FC 1.5%) there is an increase in friction between the particles, leading to the conclusion that the amount of cellulose fibers in the cementitious system influences on the rheological behavior and the occurrence of phase separation.
