Scalability of software engineering methods can be improved by application of the methods to individual components instead of complete systems. This is, however, possible only if a model of interaction between each component and its environment (rest of the system) is available. Since constructing formal models of interaction by hand is hard and tedious, techniques and tools for automated inference of the models from code are needed.We present a technique for automated extraction of models of component-environment interaction from multi-threaded software systems implemented in Java, which is based on state space traversal. Models are captured in the formalism of behavior protocols, which allows to express parallel behavior explicitly. Java PathFinder is used to perform the state space traversal. We have implemented the technique in the Java2BP tool and applied the tool on two non-trivial software systems to show that our approach is feasible.

Abstract-One popular approach to detect errors in multithreaded programs is to systematically explore all possible interleavings. A common algorithmic strategy is to construct the program state space on-the-fly and perform thread scheduling choices at any instruction that could have effects visible to other threads. Existing tools do not look ahead in the code to be executed, and thus their decisions are too conservative. They create unnecessary thread scheduling choices at instructions that do not actually influence other threads, which implies exploring exponentially greater numbers of interleavings.In this paper we describe how information about field accesses that may occur in the future can be used to identify and eliminate unnecessary thread choices. This reduces the number of states that must be processed to explore all possible behaviors and therefore improves the performance of exhaustive state space traversal. We have applied this technique to Java PathFinder, using the WALA library for static analysis. Experiments on several Java programs show big performance gains. In particular, it is now possible to check with Java PathFinder more complex programs than before in reasonable time.

Abstract. Methods of formal description and verification represent a viable way for achieving fundamentally bug-free software. However, in reality only a small subset of the existing operating systems were ever formally verified, despite the fact that an operating system is a critical part of almost any other software system. This paper points out several key design choices which should make the formal verification of an operating system easier and presents a work-in-progress and initial experiences with formal verification of HelenOS, a state-of-the-art microkernel-based operating system, which, however, was not designed specifically with formal verification in mind, as this is mostly prohibitive due to time and budget constrains. The contribution of this paper is the shift of focus from attempts to use a single "silver-bullet" formal verification method which would be able to verify everything to a combination of multiple formalisms and techniques to successfully cover various aspects of the operating system. A reliable and dependable operating system is the emerging property of the combination, thanks to the suitable architecture of the operating system.
