Cochlear Implant Considerations in Children with Additional Disabilities

Abstract: Early identification and management of disabilities in children are essential to reduce long-term developmental sequelae. Many of the causes of hearing loss also produce cognitive delays resulting in a large number of children with both deafness and developmental disabilities. Children who have hearing loss and additional disabilities require complex, individualized therapy to maximize their long-term quality of life. Hearing loss is often detected early because of widespread newborn hearing screening programs… Show more

“…Where significant additional special needs are involved, hearing loss may not be the families' primary concern. Furthermore, where disabilities, such as hearing and cognitive delay co-occur, Corrales and Oghalai (2013) suggested that adverse development effects may be greater than the sum of either disability on its own.…”

“…There is a critical age for speech and language acquisition due to neural plasticity and hearing impairment should be restored with CI prior to loss of this plasticity, especially in multi-handicapped children in whom there may be other sensory-motor losses. Hence children with hearing loss and disabilities should be recognized and managed as early as possible to reduce long term deafness effects and promote better language, intelligence and emotional development as perceived in the results of this study [9,[13][14][15].…”

“…This complex process should involve a multidisciplinary team of experts. Understanding the patients' and family's perception regarding the outcomes of CI is very important in determining the benefits of CI in terms of surgery and the rehabilitation process [13,17].…”

“…More than 30% of children with SNHL have additional disabilities, such as developmental delay, autism and attention deficit hyperactive disorders, cerebral palsy, visual impairment, mental retardation [ 28 ]. Although certain such patients develop speech perception and language skills, additional disabilities are usually associated with poor performance in terms of development of oral communication [ 29 31 ].…”
