Cocaine administration induces human splenic constriction and altered hematologic parameters

Abstract: Cocaine is a potent vasoconstrictor that has been shown to alter hemoglobin, hematocrit, and red blood cell counts in both animals and humans. The present study evaluated whether cocaine administration induces splenic constriction in men and whether spleen-volume changes temporally correlate with altered hematologic parameters. Spleen volume was assessed at baseline and after cocaine administration (0.4 mg/kg) by using magnetic resonance imaging. A group of five healthy men, aged 31 +/- 2 (SE) yr and reporting… Show more

“…100 If a subject has pre-existing polycythemia from this or other causes (e.g., an endocrinopathy 101 ), ECD application could exacerbate the situation. Although, in rare cases, fatalities that include cocaine-associated rhabdomyolysis may be associated with disseminated intravascular coagulation, 102 such a process would likely occur only after some time period, e.g., during the occurrence of renal failure.…”

“…We showed increased blood erythrocyte counts, hematocrit and hemoglobin and a concomitant decrease in spleen relative weight. It is known that the sympathetic nervous system as well as sympathomimetic drugs produce splenic capsule constriction, increasing peripheral blood erythrocyte and hematocrit values [75][76][77][78] . These effects are in the same direction as those reported here for MDMA.…”

“…Many disease states reported in association include Down's syndrome, Marfan syndrome, leptospirosis, tuberculous meningitis, atherosclerosis, sickle cell anemia and antiphospholipid syndrome [1,5] . MMS had also been described in association with cigarette smoking, use of cocaine and oral contraceptives [2,6] . Characteristic presenting clinical symptoms of MMS includes headache, transient ischemic attacks, seizures hemorrhage and infarction [1] .…”
