Cobalt induced augmentation of in vitro morphogenic potential in Erythrina variegata L.: a multipurpose tree legume

Abstract: An efficient in vitro micropropagation system for Erythrina variegata, a multipurpose tree legume was orchestrated as a tool for evaluating the effect of cobalt on morphogenesis and physiological processes of the plant. Various factors effecting in vitro growth and development were optimized. Among all the different concentrations and combinations evaluated, combination of 5.0 lM 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) and 0.5 lM 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) supplemented to MS medium induced maximum number (12.9) of shoots… Show more

“…Adventitious rooting efficiency generally varies with the use of explant sources, choice of PGR and also with the type of species. Rooting occurs more efficiently in tender plant parts than the mature ones as the young part possess active meristemic tissues (Javed and Anis 2015). In our study, 1.0 mg l −1 NAA augmented MS was quite effective for root induction in in in vitro regenerated shoots.…”

“…Cobalt is a trace element in most plant tissue culture media (39); low level of cobalt ion enhances plant growth through different mechanisms (40)(41). However, exceeding a threshold concentration of such element results in oxidative stress as indicated by appearance of oxidative stress markers (eg: MDA) (19).…”

“…Notably, Ce6 is prepared from chlorophyll a. The extraction of chlorophyll a can be achieved from different algae or plants, including Erythrina variegate [17], Bamboo leaves [18], Erythrina oricntalis leaves, Mulberry leaves, Pennisetum purpureum, and Chlorella ellipsoidea [19] etc. In this regard, Zhang's group extracted crude chlorophyll from crude silkworm excrement and prepared Ce6 through reverse Claisen condensation, hydrolysis, and acidi cation [20].…”
