Coaxing: An Empirical Exploration of a Novel Way to Nudge Athletic Performance in Sports

Abstract: This paper presents design work and empirical work, exploring a novel way of steering player behaviour and performance in sports, called 'coaxing'. We propose that athletic performance might be influenced by tricking players into thinking that their athletic abilities are different from what they really are. We approach this proposition from three different angles. First, we use related work to theoretically ground the concept of coaxing in literature. Second, we take a research-throughdesign approach to illus… Show more

“…With our current research, we have shown how game design strategies [25,37,47], can effectively be leveraged to steer player behaviour, improving focal aspects of handwashing technique such as palmar exposure, scrubbing behaviour, and handwashing duration. Yet, the washing of hands, a seemingly simple act, is in actuality an intricate and multidimensional motor movement that requires complex coordinative patterns [22].…”

“…To guide users towards proper duration, hand-surface exposure, and scrubbing behaviour, we made explicit use of 'steering strategies' as framed by [37,47]. Steering, which can be considered to fall under the umbrella of procedural persuasion [25], serves goal attainment (e.g.…”

“…The steered behaviour, in turn, could indirectly lead to changed (potentially, more permanent) perceptions, attitudes, skills, and social relations. Earlier work explored behaviour steering strategies of varying forcefulness ('require', 'insist', 'entice'; Delden et al (2017)) and varying levels of transparency about the validity of presented information ('coaxing'; Postma et al (2022b)).…”

“…The project aimed to extend the state of the art by combining sensor data, machine learning and pressure sensitive in-floor displays to create new forms of volleyball training and analysis. The sensors are used to model the behaviour of volleyball players for analysis and to design interventions to provide tailored feedback ( 32 , 33 ). User experience should be enhanced in these systems through instant multimodal and interactive feedback ( 2 , 34 36 ).…”
