Coating studies of buried pipe in soil by novel approach of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy at wide frequency domain

Abstract: The coating performance of buried pipe in clayey soil has been studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results of EIS at 300 days have been analysed by electric equivalent circuit (EEC) models. The new parameters ensemble average phase (EAP) and ensemble average impedance (EAI) were introduced, obtained directly from Bode plots at a wide frequency domain in EIS data. These two parameters proved to be effective and convenient when evaluating the performance evolution of the coatings used in… Show more

“…EIS was one of the effective means to investigate the electrochemical properties of the corroded surface of carbon steel in soils. However, soil environment is very complicated, and corrosion products of carbon steel usually combine with soil particles closely, which make EIS plots hard to analyze and various analysis methods have been proposed [29,30]. To be sample, in the Bode plots, the impedance modulus at the high/medium frequencies reflects the resistance of all products on the steel surface, and that at the low frequencies reflects the charge transfer resistance related to the iron dissolution reaction.…”

“…EIS provides qualitative and quantitative magnitudes that characterize the performance of the coating under exposed conditions [18][19][20][21]. Different processing methods and fitting models were designed, to investigate the corrosion protective mechanisms [22][23][24][25][26]. Although EIS is a valuable technique for studying dielectric properties, it fails to provide enough spatial resolution and only an average behavior can be achieved on the studied surface.…”

“…Electrochemical impendence spectroscopy, a relative mature method for measuring corrosion rate, has been successfully applied to the study of corrosion systems. [8,9] Linear polarization resistance [10] is a particularly useful technique to rapidly identify corrosion. A microsized linear polarization resistance sensor was invented to provide real-time measurements of metal loss and corrosion rate.…”
