Coating die design for suspensions

Abstract: A novel idea was proposed to the design of a coating die for delivering suspensions. In addition to considering the lateral flow uniformity of the liquid sheet, particle sedimentation is also avoided by maintaining high shear rates inside the die. Only two shims are designed to deliver the coating suspensions, and these two shims are easy to make and flexible for replacement. Two theoretical tools were developed for die design, i.e., one-dimensional lubrication approximation combined with the optimal design an… Show more

“…Particle laden flows in processes with free surfaces experience particle growth near the free surface and static contact lines in slide coating . Particle deposition has also been reported in similar coating dies . This research attempts to examine some fundamental questions about motion and agglomeration patterns of suspensions in the complex flow field of slot die coating system with moving and/or free surfaces by fundamentally studying particle–particle and particle–fluid interactions.…”

“…Little work has been carried out explicitly on premetered slurry coating devices for additive manufacturing [28]. However, investigations have been conducted into coating methods [8] and coater designs for suspensions [9] in related disciplines.…”
