The Mediterranean basin (including the Black Sea) is characterized by a plethora of deltas that have developed in a wave-influenced setting. Many of these deltas are sourced in sediments by river catchments that have been variably dammed. The vulnerability status of a selection of ten deltas subject to different levels of reduction in fluvial sediment supply following damming was analysed by quantifying changes in delta protrusion area and protrusion angle over the last 30 years. The rationale for choosing these two metrics, which do not require tricky calculations of longshore bedload transport volumes and river ‘influence’, is that as sediment supply wanes, increasing relative efficiency of waves leads to longshore redistribution of reworked sediments and progressive ‘flattening’ of the delta protrusion. The results show that eight of the ten deltas (Nile, Rhône, Ebro, Ceyhan, Arno, Ombrone, Moulouya, Medjerda) are in erosion, whereas two (Danube, Po) show stability, but the statistical relationship between change in delta protrusion area and sediment flux reduction is poor, thus suggesting that the role of dams in causing delta shoreline erosion may have been over-estimated. But this poor relationship could also be due to a long temporal lag between dam construction and bedload removal and transport to the coast downstream of dams, and, where the delta protrusion is being eroded, to bedload trapping by shoreline engineering structures and by elongating delta-flank spits. Other potential influential factors in shoreline change include subsidence, sea-level rise, storminess, exceptional river floods, and managed sediment releases downstream of dams. A longer observation period and high-resolution sediment-budget studies will be necessary to determine more definitively to which extent continued trapping of sediment behind dams will impact overall delta stability in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. Mitigation of delta erosion is likely to become costlier under continued sediment starvation and sea-level rise.

Journal of Coastal Zone Management AbstractTo investigate coastline changes, more research remains to be done on the development and use of innovative and functional geospatial techniques and procedures. This research focused on the integration of remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and modelling techniques to provide meaningful interrelationship on the spatial and temporal dynamics of coastline changes along Keti-Bunder and Kharo-Chann in Indus Delta. Data were extracted from Multi Spectral Scanner (MSS), Thematic Mapper (TM) and (Advanced Space borne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) ASTER images having the duration of thirty eight years starting from 1973 to 2011. Object based image analysis technique was used to extract the water on the criterion of (Normalized Difference Water Index) NDWI, (Modified Normalized Difference Water Index) MNDWI and threshold level slicing. Topographic maps were also used to extract the topographic information.Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) was used to analyse and predict rates of coastline change. The correlation between the calculated values of shoreline using linear regression equation 2011 and the values which was extracted from the remote sensing data of the same year having the average percentage accuracy is almost 92%. It means linear regression can be used to model the coastal erosion and accretion. The linear regression results highlighted temporal changes which are likely to occur along the coastline. Results showed that erosion rate of KetiBunder and Kharo-Chann is 16.54 and 63.79 meter per year along the coastline respectively. The areas which can be eroded and accreted in year 2020 will be almost 28.6 square kilometres and 3.6 square kilometres respectively.

Assessing the Accuracy of Automatically Extracted Shorelines on Microtidal Beaches from Landsat 7, Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 Imagery

This paper evaluates the accuracy of shoreline positions obtained from the infrared (IR) bands of Landsat 7, Landsat 8, and Sentinel-2 imagery on natural beaches. A workflow for sub-pixel shoreline extraction, already tested on seawalls, is used. The present work analyzes the behavior of that workflow and resultant shorelines on a micro-tidal (<20 cm) sandy beach and makes a comparison with other more accurate sets of shorelines. These other sets were obtained using differential GNSS surveys and terrestrial photogrammetry techniques through the C-Pro monitoring system. 21 sub-pixel shorelines and their respective high-precision lines served for the evaluation. The results prove that NIR bands can easily confuse the shoreline with whitewater, whereas SWIR bands are more reliable in this respect. Moreover, it verifies that shorelines obtained from bands 11 and 12 of Sentinel-2 are very similar to those obtained with bands 6 and 7 of Landsat 8 (−0.75 ± 2.5 m; negative sign indicates landward bias). The variability of the brightness in the terrestrial zone influences shoreline detection: brighter zones cause a small landward bias. A relation between the swell and shoreline accuracy is found, mainly identified in images obtained from Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2. On natural beaches, the mean shoreline error varies with the type of image used. After analyzing the whole set of shorelines detected from Landsat 7, we conclude that the mean horizontal error is 4.63 m (±6.55 m) and 5.50 m (±4.86 m), respectively, for high and low gain images. For the Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 shorelines, the mean error reaches 3.06 m (±5.79 m).
