Coastal Zones Ecosystem Services

Abstract: Special attention will be given to integrative research methods and techniques and to pluralistic approaches. Fundamental and critical discussions are invited of: theoretical assumptions, ethical starting points, behavioural models, (co) evolutionary change, integration concepts, the ecosystem approach and ecosystem services environmental macroeconomics, industrial ecology, spatial dimensions, thermodynamics and production functions, policy goals and instruments, international policy dimensions, alternative we… Show more

“…Supporting services underpin the delivery of all other ecosystem services, Supporting services provided by shellfish include: the cycling of nutrients through filter feeding and the creation of sediment (Cranford et al 2007); increasing seabed roughness; and providing habitats for other organisms (Seitz et al 2014;Turner & Schaafsma 2015).…”

“…Bequest value is the value of satisfaction from preserving a natural environment or a historic environment for future generations (Turner & Schaafsma 2015). Shellfisheries are often important local centres of economic activity by fishers, local points of sale and wider distribution, nationally and internationally.…”

“…Coastal zones are highly complex social-ecological systems resulting from the land and sea interface (Turner and Schaafsma 2015). This interface is characterized by interactions, synergies, and trade-offs between marine and terrestrial systems, e.g., the use of fertilizers in agriculture increases productivity, but means there is a nutrient surplus flowing to the sea, producing eutrophication (Millennium Ecosystem Assessment 2005, Turner andSchaafsma 2015).…”

“…In this context, jellyfish outbreaks can be conceived of as an event that potentially diminish the benefit humans receive from marine and coastal ecosystem services (Daily, 2003;Hassan et al, 2005;Hattam et al, 2015), particularly cultural services (e.g. tourism and recreation) (De Donno et al, 2014;Ghermandi et al, 2015;Kontogianni and Emmanouilides, 2014;Nunes et al, 2015;Palmieri et al, 2015) and provisioning services (e.g. seafood) (Angel et al, 2014;Conley and Sutherland, 2015;Graham et al, 2003;Nastav et al, 2013;Palmieri et al, 2014).…”
