Ocean and Coastal Management, Indicator-based assessment of climate-change impacts on coasts: a review of concepts, methodological approaches and vulnerability indices AbstractIncreasing human pressures on coastlines and associated threats posed by sea-level rise have stimulated development of a range of different concepts and methodological approaches to assess coastal vulnerability. The first section of this paper summarizes the concepts associated with vulnerability, natural hazards and climate change. The most widely adopted analytical approaches to vulnerability assessment are described, including spatial scales, the need for hybrid approaches comprising both biophysical and social dimensions of vulnerability, and the gradual incorporation of resilience aspects into such methodologies. In particular, the development and application of vulnerability indices is examined, based on a review of more than 50 studies that applied such indices across a range of hazards. The analytical procedures, proposed typologies, and most commonly selected variables are discussed. This overview demonstrates the breadth of vulnerability studies. This leads inevitably to lack of standardization of concepts and assumptions, which results in limited comparability between outputs for coasts from different areas. However, the widespread demand for vulnerability assessment as a component of decision-making in integrated management of the coast justifies pursuing indicator-based vulnerability assessments. In some cases these will explicitly adopt a consistent methodology that enables comparison between sites, whereas alternatively, metrics may be developed that are designed around particular system components and the site-specific functions for which they are valued. Tropical cyclones are one of the most catastrophic natural hazards regularly affecting tropical coastal areas globally. The overall impacts of tropical cyclones can be minimized using a range of management approaches, in terms of: prevention/reduction, and preparedness. Accurate and detailed spatial information on the natural and built environment is required to support the development, implementation and evaluation of these cyclone management approaches. There is a lack of appropriate mapping approaches and spatial models at local scales (<1000 km 2 ) to derive this information.This thesis developed and evaluated mapping approaches and spatial models at the local scale (<1000 km 2 ) by integrating remote sensing, field data and spatial analysis for assessing, monitoring and managing tropical cyclone impacts. Three specific objectives were addressed: (1) developing and evaluating an approach for assessing the multiple impacts of tropical cyclones through objectbased image analysis applied to moderate spatial resolution satellite imagery; (2) developing and testing a risk mapping approach for tropical cyclone impacts using an analytical hierarchy process (AHP) with data derived from remote sensing, field data and spatial analysis; and (3) producing and evaluating a simple risk modelling approach under present and future climate scenarios for tropical cyclone impacts using remote sensing, field data and spatial analysis. The developed mapping approaches and models were tested to justify the applicability in Sarankhola Upazila (151 km 2 ), a local government area in coastal Bangladesh. Cyclone Sidr (2007) was used as a case study for objective one in the study site.After introductory, review and research approach chapters, chapter four developed a method for mapping the multiple impacts of tropical cyclones. The object-based approach was used to map land cover types in pre-and post-cyclone Sidr (2007) damage to cropland and the changes to landforms. The damage results were verified using local damage reports and high spatial resolution satellite imagery that were taken after the cyclone.ii Chapter five integrated remote sensing, field data and spatial analysis for developing a multi-criteria tropical cyclone risk mapping approach at a local scale. Three risk components: 1-vulnerability and exposure; 2-hazard; and 3-mitigation capacity, and their 14 relevant criteria were considered.Thematic raster map layers were prepared for every criterion and weighted using AHP. A weighted overlay technique was used for generating vulnerability, hazard, mitigation capacity and risk maps.The verified results revealed that detailed cyclone risk information can be successfully mapped using geospatial techniques and an AHP at the local scale. The study found that incorporation of mitigation capacity significantly influenced the risk results. This study evaluates the historical coastal change and development along the eastern coastline of the Upper Gulf of Thailand between 1953 and 2019 based on a series of aerial photographs and satellite images. Long-term ($70 years) and short-term ($10 years) shoreline movement rates were analysed using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS). Results of this analysis indicate that the shoreline along the western coast (WBK) of the Bang Pakong River mouth has undergone severe coastal degradation, with a land loss of about 980 ha over the last seven decades. Meanwhile, the eastern coastline (EBK) has developed continuously over this time span, resulting in a land growth of about 552 ha. Based on historical shorelines recorded since 1954, the shoreline recession along the WBK coast accelerated over five decades. The average shoreline change rate reached approximately À9 m/year in 2002 and is shown to be related to land subsidence, which was due to groundwater
