“…Southward advection of warmer waters by the East Auckland and East Cape currents shows up in most months, although there is some variation from month to month. Some of the monthly means (e.g., June) show cooler water along the west coast of the South Island, probably caused by upwelling and or tidal mixing (Bowman et al 1983). On occasion (e.g., August and December), there is a suggestion of southward flow off the west coast of the South Island, as noted by Rahmstorf (1992).…”

“…This phenomenon can be common in nature since aquatic environments have been shown to be extremely heterogeneous. In addition to very changeable transient spatial patterns, many more stable structures also exist, associated with ocean fronts [32,33], cyclonic rings [34] and so-called meddies [35]. Spatial heterogeneity has also been found in offshore marine areas, lakes and rivers [36,37,38,39,40].…”

“…This plume appears to be a relatively persistent summer feature of the area between North and South Islands bounded to the west by a line between Capes Egmont and Farewell (here called "greater Cook Strait") (Stanton 1971(Stanton , 1976Bowman et al 1983). This area was first studied in an integrated manner during the Maui Development Study (see e.g., Bowman et al 1982Bowman et al ,1983Foster & Battaerd 1985). Some of the largest zooplankton biomasses recorded in New Zealand coastal waters have been found in greater Cook Strait (Bradford 1980), sustained in part by the cold nutrient-rich water of the upwelling plume (Bowman et al 1982;Bradford et al 1986).…”

This region is also the site of a productive squid fishery where fishers are reported to concentrate their efforts in regions of sharp temperature gradients associated with the boundaries of old pulses of upwelled water (Bowman et al 1983).…”
