Storm surges due to severe weather events threaten low-land littoral areas by increasing the risk of seawater inundation of coastal floodplains. In this paper, we present recent developments of a numerical modelling system for coastal inundation induced by sea level elevation due to storm surges enhanced by storm tides. The proposed numerical code (CoastFLOOD) performs high-resolution (5 m × 5 m) raster-based, storage-cell modelling of coastal inundation by Manning-type equations in decoupled 2-D formulation at local-scale (20 km × 20 km) lowland littoral floodplains. It is fed either by outputs of either regional-scale storm surge simulations or satellite altimetry data for the sea level anomaly. The presented case studies refer to model applications at 10 selected coastal sites of the Ionian Sea (east-central Mediterranean Sea). The implemented regular Cartesian grids (up to 5 m) are based on Digital Elevation/Surface Models (DEM/DSM) of the Hellenic Cadastre. New updated features of the model are discussed herein concerning the detailed surveying of terrain roughness and bottom friction, the expansion of Dirichlet boundary conditions for coastal currents (besides sea level), and the enhancement of wet/dry cell techniques for flood front propagation over steep water slopes. Verification of the model is performed by comparisons against satellite ocean color observations (Sentinel-2 images) and estimated flooded areas by the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI). The qualitative comparisons are acceptable, i.e., the modelled flooded areas contain all wet area estimations by NDWI. CoastFLOOD results are also compared to a simplified, static level, “bathtub” inundation approach with hydraulic connectivity revealing very good agreement (goodness-of-fit > 0.95). Furthermore, we show that proper treatment of bottom roughness referring to realistic Land Cover datasets provide more realistic estimations of the maximum flood extent timeframe.

The south coast of Indonesia has a high risk of high waves. The community around Payangan Beach was one of those affected by the high waves, which caused damage to various buildings and inundation. One of the disaster mitigations to reduce the impact that occurs is to do inundation modeling. This study aims to model inundation due to high waves on Payangan Beach using Delft3D software. Wind, bathymetry, and tide data are used as model input data. The model was created using Delft3D-FLOW for tides while Delft3D-WAVE for waves. After the program is executed, the height and area of the inundation and significant wave height will be obtained. The modeling results will be validated with existing condition data using the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). The modeling results show that the inundation height is 1.96 meters, the significant wave height is 2.45 meters, and the inundated area is 300 meters from the coastline, with 100 houses potentially inundated with an area of 187.4 m2. The validation results show that the model is quite good, with an accuracy of 96.88%. From these results, the Government of Jember was able to make a mitigation map for the inundation area on Payangan Beach and build a Sea Wall. So that in the future, high-wave disasters can be minimized.

Coastal erosion and accretion have altered the shorelines of various Indonesian coastal areas, endangering the lives and livelihoods of coastal populations. Damage to beaches in coastal areas affects the community’s daily activities, the transportation system, industry, and trade, as well as the environment and public health. Based on this occurrence, the initial stage of disaster management study resulting from coastal damage is to identify the coast’s vulnerability to threatening harm. To assess coastal vulnerability, field observations and measurement from the research location were carried out to obtain visual damage observation, land use, lithology, tidal range, and beach slope. Coastline data from satellite imagery and wind data from the government agencies were carried out to obtain the rate of shoreline change, width of damage, length of damage, and wave height. The purpose of this research is to look at changes in the coastline of Serang, Banten Province, and analyse the amount of beach damage to set priorities for coastal management. The beaches explored were Karangantu Beach, Domas Beach, Lontar Beach, and Tengkurak Beach. Karangantu Beach’s level of vulnerability is classified as very high, so dealing with it is a top priority. Domas and Lontar Beaches are extremely vulnerable, so dealing with them is a key priority. Tengkurak Beach has a moderate level of vulnerability, hence the priority for managing is rather high. This can be utilized as a model for overcoming coastal damage in Serang District, Banten Province, by constructing coastal protection buildings based on the shore’s vulnerability and management priority.
