Vanadium is a versatile element gaining significant interest due to its distribution, concentrations, accumulation, and risks. Its historical evolution in bays with substantial human populations and industrial development that use vanadium-related products is essential to evaluate environmental pollution events and the pressure on natural ecosystems. Vanadium concentrations in four sediment cores from Jiaozhou Bay (JZB), Laizhou Bay (LZB), and the East China Sea (ECS) were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Vanadium was higher in the open sea than in a semienclosed bay; the highest concentrations were found in the ECS (98.01–131.70 μg g–1), followed by LZB (66.35–104.33 μg g–1) and JZB (34.95–75.58 μg g–1). Vanadium concentrations in LZB and ECS showed drastic fluctuations and followed trends similar to those of sediment fluxes caused by anthropogenic activities and the natural courses of the two largest rivers in China, the Yangtze River and the Yellow River. Despite higher concentrations of vanadium in the ECS and LZB, the pollution indices indicated uncontaminated to low-contaminated habitats. Conversely, vanadium concentrations in the JZB illustrate the significant impacts of industries and coastal development, principally after the 1980s. Likewise, the high enrichment and pollution indices suggest that vanadium emission, migration, and circulation of JZB occur at concentrations beyond its natural threshold..

The presence of wave coherence, which contributes to the inhomogeneity of wave characteristics and significantly affects wave processes over nearshore regions of the Yellow River Delta (YRD), was simulated and analyzed in this study. A phase-resolving Boussinesq-type wave model, FUNWAVE-TVD, was used to simulate waves with desirable coherency effects. Bathymetry and topography data were obtained from the Chinese nautical chart and E.U. Copernicus Marine Service Information. After the model configuration, spatial distributions of the root mean square and significant wave heights, and the maximum cross-shore current velocity and vorticity over the domain with respect to different degrees of wave coherence and energy spectrum discretization were investigated. The results indicate that the complexity of the spatial distribution and magnitude of longshore variations in wave statistics are proportional to the degree of coherence. Waves with higher coherency exhibit more complex variabilities and stronger fluctuations along the longshore direction. The influence of morphological changes on wave height in the YRD was discernible by comparing the results with and without coherency effects. The cross-shore current velocity decreased as the waves moved toward the surf zone, while the vorticity accelerated, indicating a higher shear wave magnitude. The simulated wave dissipates more than 60% (80%) of its energy when it reaches water depths of less than 5 m (2 m) and completely dissipates when it breaks at the shore.

Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209) has been subject to restrictions since 2018 in developed countries but is still manufacturing in China. Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) is widely used as a replacement for BDE209. To better understand the behaviors and fates of these legacy and novel brominated flame retardants (BFRs), water samples were collected from the estuaries of 36 rivers that drain into the Bohai Sea (BS) and North Yellow Sea (NYS) in 2017 and 2018. The results showed that BDE209 was still the predominant compound with a median concentration of 2470 pg L À1 , whereas DBDPE had a median concentration of 129 pg L À1 . Spatially, relatively high concentrations were observed in the rivers near Laizhou Bay (LB), which is the manufacturing hub of BFRs. BDE209 concentrations were significantly higher in dry season than in wet season, which indicates a dominant process of dilution by precipitation during the wet season. DBDPE concentration showed no significant seasonal difference. This implies that wet deposition was the major additional source of DBDPE during the wet season, and the concentration increased further during the autumn as a result of a time-lag effect. The BFR concentrations in urban rivers were lower than those reported by a study undertaken in August 2013. An increase in the BFR concentrations in rural rivers since 2013 suggested increases in the use and non-point source emissions of BFRs in some remote aquatic environments. The estimated annual inputs of BDE209 and DBDPE into the BS were ~95.9 kg yr À1 and ~26.8 kg yr À1 , respectively, whereas those into the NYS were ~24.1 kg yr À1 and ~8.38 kg yr À1 . The results revealed an ecological risk of BDE209 in winter especially in the Xiaoqing River, thus suggesting the impact of BDE209 on the aquatic environment and human health.
