Context The southern and central greater glider (Petauroides volans) is a nationally listed endangered species in Australia. The species depends upon mature native forest providing critical habitat resources including tree hollows. Aims This study aimed to map and evaluate the tenure of patches of potential high-quality (core) habitat and corridors for the southern greater glider in Queensland. Methods Within greater glider habitat, we mapped 10 ranked classes of relative forest maturity using a model comprising remotely sensed metrics of canopy height, above-ground living biomass and canopy cover at a 30 m resolution. We also modelled the optimum movement corridors within and between habitat patches. Key results Results showed that 35% (4.943 million ha) of habitat was found in the more mature classes (Classes 7–9), which represent a proxy for associated limiting habitat resources, especially tree hollows. Mean patch size above a 1.6 ha threshold was found to be 122 ha and most patches (71%) were ≤10 ha, with 14 patches ≥100 000 ha. Freehold and leasehold lands hold 63.4% of the more mature habitat, multiple-use public forest 21.4% and nature conservation areas 12.8%. About half of the potential habitat is located on formally recognised Indigenous lands that represent different categories of Aboriginal ownership, management and other special rights. Conclusions The protection of mature forest patches and movement corridors is necessary for the conservation of the greater glider, a nationally listed threatened species. Implications Conservation interventions are needed, using a whole-of-landscape approach to protect core habitat and corridors from inappropriate land use.

In mines characterized by high gas concentrations, the process of extracting natural resources frequently precipitates coal and gas outbursts, positioning borehole gas extraction as a pivotal preventative strategy. Investigations aimed at identifying an optimal borehole diameter for gas extraction were undertaken within the Puxi Mine, entailing the drilling of boreholes across a spectrum of diameters and subsequent comparative analysis of the resultant data. This study meticulously evaluated the influence of seven distinct borehole diameters on gas concentration and pure flow rate, per unit length of coal hole and per unit of applied negative pressure. It was discerned that boreholes with larger diameters significantly enhance gas extraction efficacy. Specifically, boreholes of 113mm and 94mm diameters were noted for their exceptional performance, delivering pure flow rates of gas at 0.0215 m³/min and 0.0428 m³/min, respectively. Through a detailed examination of borehole diameters that presented considerable advantages, notably 113mm, 105mm, and 94mm, it was ascertained that the 94mm borehole diameter achieved the highest utilization efficiency, registering a gas pure flow rate of 1.62 × 10 −4 m 3 /min per unit diameter. Consequently, this diameter was identified as the most advantageous for gas extraction purposes. The insights garnered from this investigation are instrumental for the selection of borehole diameters tailored to gas extraction in coal seams of varying thicknesses, and they significantly contribute to the formulation of rationalized gas extraction methodologies.

Currently, coal resource-based cities (CRBCs) are facing challenges such as ecological destruction, resource exhaustion, and disordered urban development. By analyzing the landscape pattern, the understanding of urban land use can be clarified, and optimization strategies can be proposed for urban transformation and sustainable development. In this study, based on the interpretation of remote sensing data for three dates, the landscape pattern changes in the urban area of Huainan City, a typical coal resource-based city in Anhui Province, China were empirically investigated. The results indicate that: (1) There is a significant spatial-temporal transformation of land use, with construction land gradually replacing arable land as the dominant land use type in the region. (2) Landscape indices are helpful to reveal the characteristics of land transfer and distribution of human activities during a process. At the landscape type level, construction land, grassland, and water bodies are increasingly affected by human activities. At the landscape composition level, the number of landscape types increases, and the distribution of different types of patches becomes more balanced. In addition, to address the problems caused by the coal mining subsidence areas in Huainan city, three landscape pattern optimization strategies are proposed at both macro and micro levels. The research findings contribute to a better understanding of land use changes and their driving forces, and offer valuable alternatives for ecological environment optimization.
