A mechanical support in a longwall complex requires proper supervision and control of operating parameters because it is responsible for the safety of machines and workers. Its main functions are to protect the excavation against the adverse effects of rock mass and to move it along with the operational progress of the shearer and the scraper conveyor. In the era of Industry 4.0 as well as green economy and sustainable development, the development of machines and devices included in the longwall complex is an important area of invention. When it comes to the mechanical support included in the longwall complex, the authors propose changes to the hydraulic control system. The main purpose of the work was to develop a system that can automatically expand the legs of the powered support. Tests were carried out under real conditions while equipping the support section with a prototypical hydraulic system and with a system monitoring the correct operation of the prototype. This article presents the development of a prototypical installation under real conditions for testing on a longwall. The innovative solution proposed by the authors consisted of introducing a prototypical double valve block into the hydraulic system of the housing, which enables the function of automatic section expansion. The authors proposed a solution aimed at shortening the work time of the powered-support-section operator. The research results made it possible to evaluate the usefulness of the proposed solution. This type of solution can be considered technical support in the process of coal mining in an underground mine. Analysis presented in this paper, along with results from research conducted and its conclusions, can be of practical help to enclosure users to improve reliability and achieve optimal performance.

A Mechanical Analysis of Support Instability Risk along the Strike of Coalface in Thick Coal Seam with Large Dip Angle: A Case Study

To ensure safe and high-efficiency mining in the coalface with large dip angle (LDA) and large mining height (LMH), it is important to study the support stability of the coalface under the corresponding conditions. This study is based on the #3up509 coalface of the Gaozhuang Coal Mine (GCM) affiliated with the Zaozhuang Mining Area (ZMA), for which the mechanical characteristics of support in the coalface with LDA and LMH are analyzed. On this basis, the mechanical models for support tilting and sliding in the coalface are developed. Then support stability along the strike of the coalface during the normal mining period (NMP) and special mining period (SMP) is analyzed. The results show that the critical support tilting resistance during the NMP is 52.2 kN, and the critical support sliding resistance is 183.75 kN, and for the SMP, the values are 2679 kN and 4425 kN, respectively. The use of a two-leg shield support, known as ZY6600-25.5/55 (its rated working resistance is 6600 kN), is investigated, which is proved reasonable for the coalface. The influencing factors of support stability along the strike include technical parameters of the support, mining geological conditions of the coalface and specific conditions during mining. Technical measures, such as installing interlock set to fasten support and adjustable lifting jack, increasing the setting load of the support, and optimizing the support displacement method, are taken to increase the overall support stability in the coalface. The initial aim for a safe and high-efficiency mining at the #3up509 coalface has been achieved through the aforementioned measures.

A powered roof support is one of the most important machines of a longwall system. Its basic task is to ensure the safety and continuity of the mining process. The conditions of coal mining process are constantly changing and have significantly deteriorated in recent years, which in turn has also resulted in a significant increase in the requirements for mining support. As a result, it is necessary to develop an appropriate methodology that will facilitate the design and testing process of a power roof support as well as will help to select a roof support adjusted to given conditions. The article presents such a methodology. It is based on forecasted load impacting on a roof support, tests covering selected systems and elements of the section as well as legal conditions regarding the admission of the roof support to operation. This idea was developed in the form of a procedure that, by combining the three areas, should support the decision-making process in the case of different underground conditions. In terms of the expected load impacting on the support, the research team identified the most dangerous phenomena occurring in the rock mass that can generate these loads. Stand tests included impact load and permanent clamping of an excavation. The element that significantly impacts the safety of the support operation is a hydraulic leg, and therefore it was tested together with the safety system and the control system. Model tests were also carried out for the system with a safety valve. The developed concept takes into account legal conditions, which should include test results and different support operating conditions in a more flexible way. The main purpose of the work was to develop a comprehensive methodology for testing and assessing the possibility of using a powered roof support for given mining and geological conditions based on an analysis of safety and control systems. The presented approach is undoubtedly new and original, and can be widely used. It enables better adaptation of the support to given conditions. It also fits the research and activities designed to minimize the presence of miners or service workers in hazardous underground exploitation zones and to improve efficiency and boost sustainable development of the mining industry.
