Coag-Flocculation Kinetics of Mucuna sloanei Seed for Phosphorus Removal from Waste Water

Abstract: Mucuna sloanei (MS) an environmentally friendly biomass was used as a coagulant for treatment of phosphorus containing waste water. The study evaluates the coag-flocculation efficiency of MS and its functional kinetic parameter response to varying pH and dosage of the waste water effluent. Coag-flocculation reaction order α, coag-flocculation rate constant K, and coagulation period τ 1/2 were determined. The maximum coag-flocculation performance (97.4%) is recorded at rate constant, K of 1.24 × 10 −4 l/mg·min,… Show more

“…The gastropod shell conchiolin (GSC, chito-protein) was extracted from gastropod shells using slight modi cation of the method described by [29,30]. 1500g of gastropod shells were washed, sun dried, crushed and sieved using 0.6 mm sieve to obtain gastropod shell our (GSF).…”

“…Bio-coagulation mechanism followed the actual mechanism of coagulation-occulation process. It involves interaction between the negatively charged suspended particles and the positively charged coagulant particles [29]. This interaction follows four different mechanisms from the fast stirring (coagulation stage) stage to the oc sedimentation stage.…”

“…A number of researchers have worked on different materials and methods for the removal of these contaminants from wastewater. Activated carbons were employed for the removal of heavy metals through adsorption processes [1,2,3,4,5], nutrients, particularly phosphates were removed by adsorption on locally prepared activated carbons [6,7,8], agricultural wastes have been prepared as coagulants for turbidity removal through coagulation/flocculation processes [9,10,11,12,13,14]. Some works were based on th use of inorganic chemicals [15,16], ion exchange and reverse osmosis, biological treatment among others [17].…”
