Coach–Athlete Attachment and the Subjective Well-Being of Athletes: A Multiple-Mediation Model Analysis

Abstract: The current study aims to explore how coach–athlete attachment affects the subjective well-being (SWB) of athletes and is primarily focused on the confirmation of the mediating roles of athletes’ perceived coach support and self-esteem in the relationship between them. A total of 179 Chinese athletes participated in this study, in which they responded to questions comprising a coach–athlete attachment scale, a perceived coach support measurement, the Rosenberg self-esteem scale, and SWB measures. “…Attachment theory holds that relationships and interactions with intimate others develop into the IWMs that will affect personality development and behavioral patterns 16 . Such IWMs determine whether the individuals feel they have value, whether they deserve attention and love from others, and whether other people are trustworthy 45 . Parental attachment is a major type of attachment, while childhood maltreatment is largely imposed on children by parents or other family members.…”

Parental attachment affects emotional intelligence, which consists of evaluating, expressing, and regulating emotion [29][30][31] .…”

“…Finally, we performed a structural equation model analysis with interparental conflict as the independent variable, parent-adolescent relations and loneliness as the mediator variables, and OGA symptomatology as the dependent variable. The goodness-of-fit of the model was evaluated using the following indices: chi-square statistics; root-mean-square error of approximation (RMSEA), which is best if below .06; standardized root-mean-square residual (SRMR), which is best if below .08; and comparative fit index (CFI), which is best if above .95 (Anderson & Gerbing, 1988; Hu & Bentler, 1999; Peng, Jiang, et al., 2013; Peng, Ren, et al., 2020; Peng, Zhang, et al., 2020). Finally, the bootstrap method (a bootstrap sample of 1,500 was specified) was adopted to assess the magnitude of the direct and indirect effects.…”
