This paper provides a review of the geomechanics and modeling of geomechanics associated with geologic carbon storage (GCS), focusing on storage in deep sedimentary formations, in particular saline aquifers. The paper first introduces the concept of storage in deep sedimentary formations, the geomechanical processes and issues related with such an operation, and the relevant geomechanical modeling tools. This is followed by a more detailed review of geomechanical aspects, including reservoir stressstrain and microseismicity, well integrity, caprock sealing performance, and the potential for fault reactivation and notable (felt) seismic events. The cycle of fossil fuels as an energy source for mankind is approaching its end. Finite resources, coupled with greenhouse gas, have led to an increased effort in the search for alternative renewable energy sources. Brazil has a leading position, due to a 46% participation of renewable sources in its primary energy supply, compared to the global average of 12%. The expansion of the renewable sources in Brazil depends on medium and long term planning, and a large volume of investments. The present financial crisis will have major effects in the energy market. Despite a negative initial impact, it is expected that the rearrangement of the financial system will ultimately lead to an expansion in the use of renewable energy sources. Brazil is a tropical country, with the largest biodiversity in our planet and excellent conditions to expand the use of all forms of renewable sources. Keywords: energy; environment; renewable resources. introduÇÃoO panorama mundial está mudando rapidamente, por motivos ligados a três das grandes preocupações da humanidade nesse início de século: meio ambiente, energia e economia global. Embora à primeira vista possam parecer distintas, estas três áreas estão, na realidade, completamente interligadas. As duas primeiras estão já há mais tempo na percepção do cidadão comum, devido ao efeito estufa e ao aquecimento global associado ao uso de combustíveis fósseis. Quanto à economia, só o tempo dirá quais os efeitos permanentes que esta crise no sistema financeiro internacional terá sobre o setor energético e, mais difícil de se prever, sobre o meio ambiente. A única coisa certeza é de que os três setores serão permanentemente afetados.O sistema financeiro não pode ser ignorado. Para se ter uma idéia, o presidente George Bush anunciou em 2006, com grande pompa, um aporte de 1 bilhão de dólares para pesquisas em fontes alternativas de energia, com ênfase no hidrogênio. Estima-se que a crise do sistema financeiro vá consumir algo em torno de 3 trilhões de dólares. A guerra no Iraque já custou aos cofres estadunidenses um valor superior a 500 bilhões de dólares.Não importa qual a saída adotada, ela necessariamente terá que passar por uma mudança radical na matriz energética mundial, com forte aumento da participação das fontes renováveis.Neste contexto, o Brasil se destaca dos demais países por um motivo bem simples: a matriz brasileira já é cerca de 46% renovável, comparada à média mundial de 12%. 1 O Brasil tem, portanto, uma oportunidade ímpar de se firmar como um dos líderes mundiais no setor de energia. Impulsionado por seu gigantesco potencial hídrico e contando com um forte programa de combustíveis alternativos capitaneado pelo etanol, o país sai na frente dos demais. Résumé -Contribution de la méthode stationnaire dans les mesures des très faibles perméa-bilités à l'eau -Les milieux très peu perméables (k < 10 nD (10 −20 m 2 )) comme les argiles sont étudiés dans le cadre de problématiques très diverses telles que le stockage du CO 2 , les surpressions en forage profond ou le stockage des déchets radioactifs. La caractérisation pétrophysique de ces roches, et notamment la mesure de leur faible perméabilité, est difficile. La technique en laboratoire la plus répandue est celle du pulse decay. Cette technique consiste à imposer un pulse de pression en amont de l'échantillon puis de suivre l'évolution des pressions amont et aval. La durée de l'essai est supérieure à la journée pour des échantillons d'un nanoDarcy. Le signal est fortement tributaire des fuites dans le système ou des variations de température. La méthode stationnaire consiste à mesurer directement le débit d'eau à travers l'échantillon pour un gradient de pression donné. Cette technique est rarement utilisée pour les milieux très peu perméables car réputée très longue (Hsieh et al., 1981, Int. J. Rock Mech. Min. Sci. Geomech. Abstr. 18, 245-252). Des essais en laboratoire ont été réalisés sur trois échantillons. La méthode stationnaire ainsi que des méthodes transitoires (dont le pulse decay) furent employées. La limitation principale des méthodes transitoires est la difficulté d'interpréter correctement les profils de relaxation. La méthode stationnaire s'est montrée aussi rapide (trois jours pour un échantillon de 0.8 nD (8 × 10 −22 m 2 )), voire plus rapide (moins d'une journée pour un échantillon de 2.6 nD (2.6 × 10 −21 m 2 )), que la méthode du pulse decay. La perméabilité a été plus simple à déterminer et cette méthode peut être rapide avec un équipement adapté. En réalité, la faible compressibilité de la roche permet une propagation rapide des ondes de pression. De ce fait, il ne peut pas être soutenu que les conditions de régime permanent ne soient pas atteintes en un temps raisonnable. La méthode pulse decay reste une alternative intéressante à la méthode stationnaire lorsque la perméabilité est supérieure à 50 nD (5 × 10 −20 m 2 ). Abstract
