CO2 gasification of Powder River Basin coal catalyzed by a cost-effective and environmentally friendly iron catalyst

Abstract: CO 2 gasification of a sub-bituminous Wyodak coal from the Powder River Basin (PRB) was conducted in a fixed-bed laboratory gasifier at atmospheric pressure with FeCO 3 as a catalyst precursor. The effect of iron on the coal pyrolysis was evaluated by thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to characterize the iron performance in the char gasification. The iron species and oxidation states during the coal gasification, characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Möss… Show more

“…Therefore, in Fe 2 O 3 -(SG+AD), the Fe catalyst reacted at a relatively low temperature. A similar result was reported in Zhang et al's study [18], in this case, iron catalyst was considered to be coordinated to a range of oxygen-containing ligands in coal or biomass, including O 2 − , OH − , and COO − , which were generally associated with tar precursors. In our study, SG produced a large amount of tar during pyrolysis, this may be an important reason why the difference appeared after SG added.…”

“…Yeboah et al [27] and Sheth et al [28] selected Na 2 CO 3 and K 2 CO 3 to study their performance on coal catalytic gasification while calcium compounds were chosen by Jiang et al [29]. In addition to alkaline and alkaline-earth metal compounds, oxides and salts of transition metals, like Fe, also have catalytic action, which was shown in the studies of Domazetis et al [30], Popa et al [31], and Zhang et al [32]. Yeboah et al [27], Fan et al [33], and Monterroso et al [34] discovered that the composite catalyst combined with these three kinds of catalysts has a higher catalytic efficiency.…”

“…Catalyst improves the kinetics of reaction based on the reaction rate and conversion. The improvement in kinetics enhances the gasification process and improves the energy yield in terms of product gases [12]. Kirtania et al [18] studied the algal biomass char reactivity in thermo gravimetric analyser using CO 2 and steam as gasifying agent between 800 and 950°C.…”

“…Palm oil waste can be classified into Palm kernel shell (PKS), Palm oil fronds (POF) and Empty fruit bunches (EFB) in which PKS is more suitable for gasification process [11]. The heating value of biomass is very important in gasification process because low density energy raw material directly affect the overall cost and output energy obtained in the form of product gases [12]. PKS has higher calorific value (20 MJ/kg) and high fixed carbon and volatile matter (14.87% and 81.03% respectively) [13].…”
