Co‐treatment of the male partner in vaginal candidosis: a double‐blind randomized control study

Abstract: In a double-blind study, 117 non-pregnant women with vaginal candidosis were treated for 3 days with 200 mg-tablets of ketoconazole taken once, twice or three times daily. The incidence of predisposing factors or of a recurrence history did not differ between treatment groups. Their male partners were randomly assigned to receive ketoconazole, 200 mg twice daily or placebo for 3 consecutive days. Cure and recurrence rates were not different in the three treatment groups, with or without simultaneous treatment … Show more

“…However, concomitant antifungal therapy of the male sexual consort of women with RVVC has generally not been reported to have any in¯uence on the attack rate of RVVC 187 . For example, in a double-blind randomized study of 117 couples, cure and recurrence rates in women were not different with or without simultaneous treatment of male partners with various ketoconazole regimens 187 .…”

“…Recurrent disease in women is associated with presence of the same strains of Candida in their own oral cavity, gut, and mouth, but also in the gut, mouth or on the glans penis of their partners [2,3] . Still systematic treatment of men is not likely to improve the recurrence rate of candidosis in most women, showing that sexual transmission is rather seldom the primary cause of infection in women [4][5][6] . Furthermore, women without sexual activity present as often with acute and recurrent candidosis as their sexually active counterparts, and sexual promiscuity does not necessarily lead to a more frequent occurrence of candidosis, unless frequent antibiotics have been prescribed for other infections.…”

“…Bisschop et al (22) carried out a double-blind randomized clinical trial in Belgium with 117 women treated with 200 mg of ketoconazole twice a day for three days, whose partners were randomly treated with ketoconazole or placebo. Cure and recurrence rates were similar among women with treated (cure: 48/57 and recurrence: 13/48) or placebo partners (cure: 53/60 and recurrence: 19/53), as seen in Table 1.…”
