CO2-switchable polymer-hybrid silver nanoparticles and their gas-tunable catalytic activity

Abstract: A new type CO2-switchable AgNPs hybrids show switchable and monotonous tunable catalytic activity for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol by varying the flow rate of CO2purged into the reaction system.

“…The fascinating influence of CO 2 to control hydrophobicity/ hydrophilicity balance was also explored by Guo et al using trithioester terminated poly(N,N-diethylamino-2-ethylmethacrylate) (PDEAEMA) to place the polymer on the surface of growing Ag NPs. 192 However, the 4-NP reduction with this catalyst was so inefficient that it is unclear why these hydrogel changes matter. The tunability of catalytic properties in the temperature range of 25−70 °C in the same reaction has been studied for P(NIPAM-AAm-MAA) microgels with Ag NPs, but again rate constants were unremarkable.…”

“…Through manipulating CO 2 -bubbling time and changing the protonation degree of the polymer chains, the activity of the anchored nanocatalysts can be precisely tuned on demand. For example, PDEAEMA chains were reported to have fast response and good cycling performance, and the CO 2 -triggered change of their hydrophilicity has a great influence on the segmental stretch, degree of swelling, , and catalyst solubility in different polymer systems, which can regulate the transfer of the substrates to the active area of catalysts and thus the catalytic process. For example, using CO 2 stimuli-responsive polymer microgels as carriers of metal nanocatalysts and stabilizers to emulsify liquid organic hydrogen carriers can achieve a durable (recyclable) catalysis and programmable hydrogen generation …”

“…However, as for amidine-based CO 2 -responsive polymers, heating is usually needed to expel the captured CO 2 . In contrast, polymer containing tertiary amine groups could realize reversible responsiveness in the same condition upon alternate treatment of CO 2 and N 2 . DEA was an inexpensive, commercially available, and typical monomer with tertiary amine group and was selected as the monomer.…”

“…We found previously that the PDEA itself can undergo a hydrophobic–hydrophilic transition by the stimulation of CO 2 , and reported that microgels containing PDEA exhibited size expansion and collapse upon cyclic purging with CO 2 /N 2 . It was anticipated that the as-fabricated giant microgels are still gas-sensitive. To confirm this speculation, CO 2 gas was introduced into the suspensions of giant microgels.…”
