Co-occurrence of developmental and behavioural problems in moderate to late preterm-born children

Abstract: Up to 39% of 4-year-old MLP children with developmental delay also have EBP, indicating that increased awareness of EBP is warranted in MLP children with developmental delay. Further research is needed to determine whether early detection of co-occurring problems results in better long-term health.

“…Peralta et al recently reported that socio-emotional and behavioral competence problems in very preterm born toddlers were associated with cognitive and language delays on the Bayley-III scales [15]. Additionally, a study in the Netherlands compared a parent questionnaire of development (Ages and Stages Questionnaire) to the CBCL questionnaire in a group of moderately preterm and term 4 year olds [16]. They found that problem-solving skills correlated with externalizing behavioral problem scores while personal-social skills correlated with internalizing behavioral problems.…”

“…Males born late preterm have increased risk for neurodevelopmental delay, later school achievement, and other long‐term outcomes than females born late preterm (Boyle et al, ; Rose & Engle, ). Infants of lower gestational age at birth have greater risk of complications than those of higher gestational age at birth (Potijk, de Winter, Bos, Kerstjens, & Reijneveld, ).…”
