Co-infection by Streptococcus anginosus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis: three case reports

Abstract: IntroductionBacterial infections may appear as sequelae of remote tuberculous infections, especially thoracic infections. The simultaneous appearance of tuberculosis and bacterial infection is not common, and, to our knowledge, the association of infection by Streptococcus anginosus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis has not been reported previously in the literature.Case presentationWe report three cases of dual infection with Streptococcus anginosus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis that were first diagnosed as pyo… Show more

“…It was reported that S. anginosus infections might simulate tuberculosis [37]. Indeed, three cases of co-infection by S. anginosus and M. tuberculosis were reported previously [38]. P. micra is a Gram-positive anaerobe usually isolated from the human oral cavity.…”

“…However, this is a quite rare occurrence in immunocompetent patients, being much more common in HIVinfected subjects who are at higher risk of pneumococcal infection (i.e. the most frequent co-infecting agent) [6].…”

“…Simultaneous infections with MTB and other agents is rare, typically involve S. pneumoniae and are most commonly reported among HIV-infected patients [1]. Clinically, the isolation of SAG co-infection with MTB has not been described in pediatric patients [6]. In this report, we describe a case of an abscess caused by the duality SAG-MTB coinfection in a pediatric immunocompetent.…”
