Co-financing for viral load monitoring during the course of antiretroviral therapy among patients with HIV/AIDS in Vietnam: A contingent valuation survey

Abstract: BackgroundViral load testing is considered the gold standard for monitoring HIV treatment; however, given its high cost, some patients cannot afford viral load testing if this testing is not subsidized. Since foreign aid for HIV/AIDS in Vietnam is rapidly decreasing, we sought to assess willingness to pay (WTP) for viral load and CD4 cell count tests among HIV-positive patients, and identified factors that might inform future co-payment schemes.MethodsA multi-site cross-sectional survey was conducted with 1133… Show more

“…These patients were more likely to develop pessimism and thus, had a negative viewpoint of the preventive measures and were less likely to be willing to pay for the vaccine. 45 Notably, we did not find any relationships between awareness of and attitude toward the dengue vaccine and the WTP for the vaccine. Previous studies in Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam indicated significant associations between the knowledge of preventive methods against dengue with WTP.…”

“…Also, having no access to Medicaid prior to the US Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) [60] left many PLWH without health care coverage. These findings reinforce the need for health insurance coverage for PLWH in terms of affecting quality of life [61] as well as the need for non-stigmatizing, quality health insurance [62]. Without the PPACA, many more would likely have been without insurance in this study, not including those excluded from PPACA because of their undocumented or immigration status (documented but within 5 years of entering the country).…”

“…Basically, a total of eight outpatient clinics located in Hanoi and Nam Dinh—2 epicenters of HIV/AIDS—were selected, including a national hospital (Hanoi), a provincial hospital (Nam Dinh), a provincial center (Nam Dinh), three district health centers from Hanoi, and two district health centers from Nam Dinh. Some articles using the same dataset and methods were published elsewhere [ 17 , 18 ].…”
