Co-designing smart home technology with people with dementia or Parkinson's disease

Abstract: Involving users is crucial to designing technology successfully, especially for vulnerable users in health and social care, yet detailed descriptions and critical reflections on the co-design process, techniques and methods are rare. This paper introduces the PERCEPT (PERrsona-CEntred Participatory Technology) approach for the co-design process and we analyse and discuss the lessons learned for each step in this process. We applied PERCEPT in a project to develop a smart home toolset that will allow a person l… Show more

“…Numerous studies have addressed areas of concern for ageing populations in general rather than specifically for those with dementia. 43,44 Some have reported on the use of general memory aids, which can be used by those undergoing memory problems and other cognitive impairments. 45 Mobile phone-based technologies have been reported as potential means of promoting social contact.…”

“…We decided that the app should have three stages: one to allow the users to choose the source text they want to redact ('Choose'); one where they apply the computer-aided redaction ('Erase'); and a fnal stage to arrange the text ('Arrange'). The co-design process employed techniques such as SWIM (Someone Who is not Me) [48] via co-created personas [6,34] and visual rating scales (as above) to facilitate idea generation and feedback for these three stages.…”

“…Finally, Bourazeri, Stumpf and colleagues [5,29] used personas with potential technology users who have dementia and Parkinson's disease. Their approach is the most clearly structured of those found in the literature.…”
