Co-Creation with Older Adults to Improve User-Experience of a Smartphone Self-Test Application to Assess Balance Function

Abstract: This co-creation study aimed to develop a smartphone self-test application for balance and leg strength in collaboration between older adults and the research team. The paper describes older participants’ preferences for, and their contribution to, the application design. Technology to assess movements is available in smartphones with built-in sensors, and one of the challenges is to develop a valuable self-test for older adults. The participants contributed to the design of the application’s instructions and … Show more

“…In addition, accessible design principles for older adults may be incorporated by including a consistent and simple interface, making the most essential functionalities readily visible and available, and making it easier to “undo” an unintended action [ 57 , 58 ]. A co-creation approach that engages older patients in all stages of app development and user testing is also important for improving app adoption and user experience [ 59 , 60 ].…”

“…The Honeycomb Model is a frequently used tool in real-world contexts to inform development by understanding the users' experience across seven domains—valuable, usefulness, usable, desirable, accessible, findable, and credible 30 , 31 . Different forms of the model have been used previously in digital health interventions 33 , 34 . There is no one defined method for using the tool.…”

“…We have in co-creation with older adults developed a prototype for a self-test application, MyBalance, to be utilized independently by older adults without a health care consultation [ 55 ]. The MyBalance test measures body sway in static quiet standing and leg strength when rising from a chair, and the current study was part of the first evaluation process of this application.…”
