Co-catalytic Effect of Functionalized SiO2 Materials on H2 Production from Formic Acid by an Iron Catalyst

Abstract: Surface modified L@SiO 2 particles bearing covalently attached functional groups (L) have been tested as co-catalysts for H 2 production from Formic Acid (FA) by the homogenous Fe II /P(CH 2 CH 2 PPh 2 ) 3 catalyst. The L@SiO 2 particles induce remarkable increase of catalytic H 2 production i.e. by 710 %, when L=a basic functionality such as Imidazoles, or NH 2 -groups. This effect is attributed to a thermodynamic promotion of FA deprotonation facilitating coordination of HCOOanion on the Fe II atom of active… Show more

“…Additionally, by controlling the population of surface groups of SiO 2 i.e., number of Si-OH vs. Si-O-Si, we can control the efficiency of H 2 production; this is because the Si-O-Si bridges promote the FA deprotonation due to their better ability for proton abstraction [54]. In this work, the beneficial effect of the SiO 2 NPs can be optimal at ratio FA/[≡Si-O-Si] = 200/1, In the same context, SiO 2 -NPs modified by organic basic functionalities were shown to provide a significant beneficial effect in the catalytic efficiency of the Fe/phosphine system [62]. More particularly, the use of imidazole-functionalized SiO 2 increased TOFs from 2412 h −1 to 16,432 h −1 , while the use of NH 2 -functionalized -SiO 2 increased TOFs from 2412 h −1 to 14,942 h −1 .…”
