CML: The commonKADS conceptual modelling language

Abstract: Abstract. We present a structured language for the specification of knowledge models according to the CommonKADS methodology. This language is called CML (Conceptual Modelling Language) and provides both a structured textual notation and a diagrammatic notation for expertise models. The use of our CML is illustrated by a variety of examples taken from the VT elevator design system.

“…So far, most of the research effort has focused on identifying and specifying PSMs. As a result, several PSM libraries are now available Breuker et al, 1987;Benjamins, 1993;Puppe, 1993;O'Hara, 1995;Breuker and van de Velde, 1994;Motta, 1997) and a number of PSM specification languages have been proposed, ranging from informal notations (Benjamins, 1993;Schreiber at al., 1994) to formal modeling languages (Fensel and van Harmelen, 1994). The latter area of research is now well established, to such an extent that two projects, one in Europe, IBROW 3 (Benjamins et al, 1998), and one in the US, High Performance Knowledge Bases (HPKB, 1997), have been set up with the aim (among other ones) of producing standard formalisms for PSM specification.…”

“…Christiansson [4] proposed semantic web and temporal databases as knowledge representation techniques for new generation of knowledge management systems. One of the most sophisticated knowledge modeling methodologies is Common KADS [24]. Common KADS explains how to model a knowledge application through structural top-down analysis of the problem domain.…”

“…Schreiber [23,24], à partir des méthodes KADS ou CommonKads ainsi que Caulier [2], Simon [25], Glaser [11], Wielinga [26] exploitent cette approche ; CommonKADS [4] étend KADS. Il n'est pas dans notre propos de détailler l'ensemble de ces méthodes dans cet article.…”
