Clusters of anthropometric indicators of body fat associated with maximum oxygen uptake in adolescents

Abstract: IntroductionThe aim of this study was to evaluate different clusters of anthropometric indicators (body mass index | BMI |, waist circumference | WC |, waist-to-height ratio | WHtR |, triceps skinfold |TR SF|, subscapular skinfold |SE SF|, sum of the triceps and subscapular skinfolds | ΣTR + SE |, and sum of the triceps, subscapular and suprailiac folds | ΣTR + SE + SI|) associated with the VO2max levels in adolescents.MethodsThe study included 1,132 adolescents (aged 14–19 years) enrolled in public schools of… Show more

“…These results may be associated with differences related to training objectives or the preference for the development of specific physical capacities. However, Torres-Luque et al 25 , found that physical performance between men and women presents fundamental changes from the age of 11, however, given the imminent hormonal development and its impact on anthropometric markers such as weight and height, qualities such as aerobic resistance tends to decrease, a situation that agrees with our results, which reflect a low performance in the resistance tests 26 . Despite the above, it is necessary to recognize the difference in sample size between men and women, so it is necessary to increase the number of women participating in the study, to make conclusive statements.…”

“…Biological maturation is a factor that influences the aerobic fitness level of adolescents. This is because VO 2max increases in males throughout the period of puberty to adulthood whereas in girls, VO 2max increases only at the beginning of puberty, remaining unchanged from the end of puberty to adulthood [ 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ]. Thus, it is important to emphasize that biological maturation was tested as a covariate in this study.…”

“…In adulthood, low levels of aerobic fitness are related to cardiovascular diseases, early death from all causes, diabetes, and stroke [ 3 ]. In childhood and adolescence, adequate levels of aerobic fitness can reduce obesity rates [ 4 ], promote healthy bone development [ 5 ], better academic performance [ 6 ] and mental health [ 7 ], decrease the amount of total and central body fat [ 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ], and reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases in adulthood [ 13 ].…”

“…Studies have shown that age is positively associated with cardiovascular fitness (Tomkinson et al, 2019), whereas body fat may be inversely related to cardiorespiratory endurance in children and adolescents (Clark et al, 2015; Gonçalves et al, 2018; Héroux et al, 2013). The relationship between age and cardiorespiratory fitness could be due to several biological parameters, such as a high muscle mass, cardiovascular maturation, and growth.…”
