Clusters and Switchers in Globally Coupled Photochemical Oscillators

Abstract: We experimentally investigate the transition to synchronization in a population of photochemical oscillators with weak global coupling. Above a critical coupling strength the oscillators join a one-phase group or two-phase clusters. The number of oscillators in each cluster depends on the initial phase distribution, and irregular switching of oscillators between clusters is observed. The fully synchronized state emerges above a second critical coupling strength. In agreement with earlier theory, the experiment… Show more

“…The chemical micro-oscillators used in this study are catalyst-loaded cation-exchange beads in a catalyst-free BZ reaction mixture 10,18,[31][32][33] . To increase oscillator homogeneity, the particles (DOWEX WX4 100-200, diameters 75-150 μ m) were sieved to obtain a narrow size distribution of 106-112 μ m. The rutheniumtris-dimethylene-bipyridine ( + Ru(dmbpy) 3 2 ) catalyst was slowly added to 5.0 ml water containing 1.0 g of doubly-sieved beads and stirred with a vortex mixer for one day.…”

“…We used the non-dimensionalized ZBKE model 10,28,31 (see Supplementary Section 'Numerical models') with a rectangular distribution in the parameter q ∈ [0.6, 0.8] that leads to a heterogeneous period distribution with a standard deviation of 4.4% of the mean period. Nonlocal coupling was applied to each oscillator via the model parameter I j,k in a similar manner to equation (1), but with the measured greyscale value g j,k replaced by the oxidized catalyst concentration of the model.…”

“…We therefore developed an oscillator array that permits the simultaneous perturbing and coupling of over 1000 oscillators. (Our previous studies of photochemically coupled BZ oscillators have been limited to approximately 40 oscillators [19][20][21][22][23].) In the oscillator array, the photosensitive oscillators are catalyst-loaded beads of about 200 μm in diameter, each of which is fixed on a film of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), which is then positioned in an open reactor that is continually replenished with a catalyst-free BZ solution.…”
