Clustering of Neonatal Deaths inBangladesh: Results From theProjahnmo Studies

Abstract: The preceding sibling's outcome may be a surrogate for genetic and other maternal health factors such as nutrition, infection or environmental factors that were not measured within Projahnmo. Further research into these factors is required in order to explain the variation in the risk for NM.

“…Fourth, many questions remain with regard to the period of death. While some authors choose to focus on postneonatal deaths (e.g., Curtis et al 1993;Reid 2002), others focus on neonatal deaths (see, e.g., Bhalotra and van Soest 2008;Nonyane et al 2013). Yet others include all perinatal deaths, including stillbirths (Reid 2001;Lundevaller and Edvinsson 2012).…”

“…However, this argument does not always hold: social and cultural practices may play a large role in the first weeks of life as well (Nonyane et al 2013). For instance, in nineteenth-century Iceland, the incidence of neonatal tetanus was extremely high through infection of the umbilical stump (Garðarsdóttir 2002).…”

“…Loss of the previous pregnancy can increase the importance of a successful outcome for mother and birth attendants Last delivery prior to focus birth was Caesarean section Scar rupture, placental complications and increased morbidity and mortality for mother and infant have been associated with recent Caesarean section [6,21] Multiple potential complications with increased risk of requiring another Caesarean section therefore needs good access to CEmONC. There has been no successful trial of scar Sibling prior to focus birth died in first month of life Associations have been found between sibling neonatal outcomes including stillbirth and newborn mortality [22,[39][40][41] Loss of the previous newborn can increase the importance of a successful outcome for mother and birth attendants Focus birth is to woman aged under 16 Stillbirth, preterm labour, low birthweight, neonatal mortality, small-for-gestational age infants [42][43][44] Multiple potential complications including neonatal mortality…”

“…A recent research showed that neonates whose preceding sibling had died as a neonate in the mothers' lifetime pregnancy history were more likely to die than those with a living sibling (22). Based on data of the Turkish Statistical Institute (1991), the leading causes of infant deaths were birth injury, perinatal asphyxia, and other causes of perinatal mortality, followed by LRSI, and heart diseases.…”
