A db-Scan Hybrid Algorithm: An Application to the Multidimensional Knapsack Problem

This article proposes a hybrid algorithm that makes use of the db-scan unsupervised learning technique to obtain binary versions of continuous swarm intelligence algorithms. These binary versions are then applied to large instances of the well-known multidimensional knapsack problem. The contribution of the db-scan operator to the binarization process is systematically studied. For this, two random operators are built that serve as a baseline for comparison. Once the contribution is established, the db-scan operator is compared with two other binarization methods that have satisfactorily solved the multidimensional knapsack problem. The first method uses the unsupervised learning technique k-means as a binarization method. The second makes use of transfer functions as a mechanism to generate binary versions. The results show that the hybrid algorithm using db-scan produces more consistent results compared to transfer function (TF) and random operators.

Summary Clustering is one of the essential operations in wireless sensor network (WSN) to ensure organized data aggregation followed by energy efficiency. However, obtaining optimal clustering performance is yet an unsolved problem in WSN. Review of existing approaches towards cluster optimization shows that effective balance between energy efficiency and topology control is still missing. Therefore, the proposed system presents a unique topology control mechanism using a novel concept of interstellar orientation toward optimizing the clustering performance in WSN. Adopting an analytical research methodology, the proposed system introduces two interstellar‐based topology control system, which targets the maximum saving of resource consumption of the cluster head. The simulated outcome of the study shows that the proposed topology control system offers significant energy conservation performance in comparison to the existing hierarchical clustering scheme in WSN.

In this work, M-LEACH (Modified Distributed Energy Efficient Clustering) protocol, a new variant of LEACH is proposed after survey of LEACH. The proposed M-LEACH is designed for three different segregations for the nodes to elongate the stability & lifetime of the network. Hence, it increases the heterogeneity & energy level of the network. In LEACH, amplification energy is set same for all kinds of transmissions. Using low energy level for intra cluster transmissions with respect to cluster head to BS transmission leads in saving much amount of energy. Moreover, multi power levels also reduce the packet drop ratio, collisions and/ or interference for other signals. The proposed M-LEACH outperforms to existing classical LEACH.
