Clustered Cases of Pneumonia among Healthcare Workers over a 1-year Period in Three Italian Hospitals: Applying the WHO SARS Alert

Abstract: The occurrence of clusters of two or more cases of pneumonia in HCW in the same hospital unit appears to be an uncommon event, and thus the alert system proposed is not likely to result in large numbers of false positive alerts. However, it may be difficult to implement this alert system in countries where clinical data on sickness absences are not routinely collected, and alternative mechanisms should be considered.

“…Finally, these losses would also affect the taxes collected, with 50% of the tax reduction occurring in state and county tax categories. Besides the impact on tourism, it is important to remember that CHIKV can also induce additional costs on health facilities (Shang et al, 2021) and increase absenteeism (Puro et al, 2006), which would be in addition to the costs estimated here. Further research should be done in these areas.…”

“…There is a vast literature on the economic impacts of public health crises, the effects of which can vary widely depending on the disease, geography, income levels, and public health response, but are almost always negative. One of the primary effects of a public health crisis is job reduction associated with absenteeism (Puro et al, 2006). Another aspect contributing to economic losses at the household and business levels is the increase in direct medical expenditures related to the need to care for the disease, which also places pressure on health and emergency systems to adequately respond, often with limited resources.…”

“…respiratory disease occurring in small groups of individuals such as a family or classroom are an unusual event outside of chronic care facilities and generally represent an event of public health importance [13]. Pneumonia related to seasonal influenza, pneumococci, haemophilus influenza infections and other commonly recognized pathogens typically does not occur in multiple members of the same family, classroom or work place in a short period of time.…”
