Club convergence in Latin America

Abstract: This paper assesses the convergence in per capita income of a group of 18 Latin American countries over the period 1950–2008. We employ a novel regression based convergence test proposed by (Phillips, P. C. B., and D. Sul. 2007. “Transition Modeling and Econometric Convergence Tests.”

“…Of a total of 402 articles on EEs, the group of Latin American and Caribbean countries accounts for only 29 publications, losing ground to Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia, and Europe, which correspond to 30, 86, and 93 publications, respectively, between 1991 and 2020. Such evidence confirms that Latin American and the Caribbean countries have not received sufficient scientific attention in the growth literature, as stated by Martin and Vazquez (2015), Barrios et al (2019), and Hofman and Valderrama (2020).…”

“…Mostly due to rapid growth in China, the Asian economies observed an increased growth performance when compared to other EEs, including Latin America (Darku & Yeboah, 2018). However, the slower economic growth of the latter region does not seem to have received sufficient scientific attention, in which some authors contend that the growth literature regarding this group has been quite scarce (Barrios et al, 2019; Hofman & Valderrama, 2020; Martin & Vazquez, 2015).…”

“…They further suggest that investment, human capital, and openness increase the probability of regions to be in the high‐income club. Martin and Vazquez () study income per capita convergence clubs across 18 Latin American countries and for 59 years (1950–2008). Having identified three convergence clubs of which two display relative convergence, the authors investigate various determinants of club formation.…”

“…On the contrary, Cáceres (1999) and Nuñez and Sandoval (2002), by means of unit root test find regional divergence for 17 countries. More recently, King and Ramlogan-Dobson (2016) find evidence on the existence of two clubs, and Martin and Vazquez (2015) states that there are three clubs of convergence in Latin America.…”
