CloudSimSDN‐NFV: Modeling and simulation of network function virtualization and service function chaining in edge computing environments

Abstract: Summary Software‐defined networking (SDN) has evolved and brought an innovative paradigm shift in computer networks by utilizing a programmable software controller with open protocols. Network functions, previously served on dedicated hardware, have shifted to network function virtualization (NFV) that enabled functions to be virtualized and provisioned dynamically upon generic hardware. In addition to NFV, edge computing utilizes the edge resources close to end‐users, which can reduce the end‐to‐end service d… Show more

“…The CloudSimSDN-NFV simulator [62] was used in these studies. The results collected from the proposed algorithm are compared against the least full first (LFF) strategy [62]. The LFF strategy tries to place the VNF on the least loaded server node, which has the least amount of resources allocated in terms of computing energy and network bandwidth.…”

“…The emergence of modern technologies such as Cloud Computing, Software Defined Networking (SDN), Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), Edge Computing and the Internet of Things (IoT) have rapidly transformed end-to-end service provisioning over the past decade [1] and have smart services for subscription. On -demand cloud user requests with well-defined Service Level Agreements (SLA) often have different Quality of Service (QoS) requirements for processing and delivery.…”

“…1 Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) is an important service model of the cloud computing paradigm in which providers allocate virtual computing resources as virtual machines (VMs) on physical machines (PMs) to customers over the internet. [2][3][4] According to Gartner, 5 the market for public cloud will reach over $306.9 billion at the end of 2021 and $364 billion at the end of 2022. Gartner expects the hyperscale providers, such as Amazon AWS, Google Cloud Platform, Alibaba, and Microsoft Azure, to account for 70% of the market by the end of 2021.…”
