Cloudberry (Rubus chamaemorus) cell culture with bioactive substances: Establishment and mass propagation for industrial use

Abstract: The availability and quality of wild berry material is strongly affected by seasonal variations, human resources, and both chemical and biological pollutants. Here we describe for the first time the industrial scale biotechnological production of cloudberry (Rubus chamaemorus) cells of consistent quality and defined chemical composition. Callus was initiated from sterile cuts of the wild cloudberry leaves. Bright yellow, soft callus of uniform quality was selected by regular subculturing, and a stable line suc… Show more

“…Given the commercial production of its fruit, Rubus idaeus has considerable economic importance in Europe and Poland [ 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 ]. Raspberry fruit is intended either for direct consumption or for processing in many industries: food [ 20 , 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 ], pharmaceutical [ 20 , 28 , 32 , 33 ], cosmetic [ 28 , 30 , 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 ], and nanotechnological [ 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 ] industries. Raspberry shrubs are a source of medicinal and cosmetic raw materials, i.e., Rubi idaeus fructus [ 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 , 45 ] and Rubi idaeus folium [ 20 , 46 , 47 , 48 ].…”

“…Hordeum vulgare ‘Pokko’ cell suspension culture (barley, VTTCC P-120080) was established and maintained as described in Ritala et al (1993) . Rubus idaeus (raspberry, VTTCC P-120090), Rubus chamaemorus (cloudberry, VTTCC P-120083, Supplementary Figure S2 ) and Rubus arcticus (arctic bramble, VTTCC P120089) were maintained as described in Nohynek et al (2014) with slight modifications ( Supplementary Figure S5 ). Vaccinium myrtillus (bilberry, VTTCC P-120045) cell suspension was maintained in modified McCown Woody Plant medium ( McCown and Lloyd, 1981 ).…”

“…motia) [39]. Very high concentrations of kinetin were found in stem cells of lemon (Citrus limon) [41] and raspberry (Rubus chamaemorus) [42]. Kinetin is considered to be a strong natural antioxidant which protects protein and nucleic acids from oxidation and glycoxidation processes [43][44][45].…”
