This review surveys the literature on reference materials for geological and environmental research for the two year period 2006–2007. In this time ca. 1200 publications appeared containing analytical data on reference materials, indicating that their importance for analytical work has been recognised by geochemists and environmental scientists. Although many reference materials exist, there remains a pressing need for further samples, especially for certified rock reference materials, homogeneous reference glasses, mineral reference materials and so‐called delta‐zero materials for normalisation purposes of stable isotopes. This review focuses on six topics: rock reference materials, reference materials for platinum‐group elements, reference glasses, mineral reference materials, environmental reference materials (seawater, soil) and isotopic reference materials (radiogenic, stable isotopes). In addition, a short description is given of the GeoReM database for reference materials of geological and environmental interest, which contains analytical data from the publications discussed in this review.

In the present study, a new cloud point extraction methodology based on the selective preconcentration and the extraction of stable lead in acidic conditions with 4',4''(5'')-di-tert-butyldicyclohexano-18-crown-6 as a chelating agent was developed, optimized and validated. A mixture of Triton X-114 as non-ionic surfactant and CTAB as cationic surfactant was used to produce micellar structures that incorporate the chelating agent. Phase separation, induced by coacervation, was achieved by increasing the temperature of the system above the cloud point temperature. Pb extraction efficiency was maximized through an optimisation process where the effect of each parameter (i.e. non-ionic and ionic surfactant concentrations, pH, chelating agent concentration and cloud point temperature) on the chemical recoveries of Pb was assessed. Under optimum experimental conditions, the method reaches recoveries greater than 67% for Pb in a variety of complex matrices. In order to facilitate the quantification of Pb by plasma based instrumentations, a back-extraction procedure using aqueous solution of ammonium citrate were performed on the surfactant rich phase in order to reduce the effects on sample introduction and non-spectral interferences. LOD and LOQ of 0.8µgL and 2.6µgL, respectively, were determined by ICP-OES for the complete procedure. Using the back-extraction approach, a preconcentration factor of 39 was achieved for an initial sample volume of 195mL. The ruggedness of the methodology was validated by determining Pb concentration in various environmental and biological samples.

A fast, simple, and economical method was developed for simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of uranium(VI) and vanadium(V) in water samples based on micro cloud point extraction (MCPE) at room temperature. This is the first report on the simultaneous extraction and determination of U(VI) and V(V). In this method, Triton X114 was employed as a non-ionic surfactant for the cloud point procedure and 4-(2-pyridylazo) resorcinol (PAR) was used as the chelating agent for both analytes. To reach the cloud point at room temperature, the MCPE procedure was carried out in brine. The factors influencing the extraction efficiency were investigated and optimized. Under the optimized condition, the linear calibration curve was found to be in the concentration range between100 -750 and 50 -600 μg L -1 for U(VI) and V(V), respectively, with a limit of detection of 17.03 μg L -1 (U) and 5.51 μg L -1 (V). Total analysis time including microextraction was less than 5 min.
