Abstract. Cloud computing is a new benchmark towards enterprise application development that can facilitate the execution of workflows in business process management system. The workflow technology can manage the business processes efficiently satisfying the requirements of modern enterprises. Besides the scheduling, the fault tolerance is a very important issue in the workflow management. In this paper, we analyse and compare between some existing checkpointing strategies, then we propose a lightweight checkpointing adequate to the cloud computing and the workflows characteristics. The proposed strategy is an Adaptive Time based Coordinated Checkpointing ATCCp, it ensures a strong consistency without any synchronization. ATCCp uses the concept of soft checkpointing to minimize the storage time and it uses the VIOLIN topology to improve the checkpointing performances. According to the experimental results, our approach decreases the overhead and the SLA violations.

In Grid computing, a common task is performed by combining the resources from different locations or domains. It will use only the fixed number of resources available in different locations. It doesn't scale the resources according to the users' demand. On the other hand cloud computing provides resources to users according to their demand. Grid computing uses the autoscaling capacity of cloud in resource scaling. That means, cloud provides resources to grid and thereby achieving resource autoscaling in grid computing. In this paper, grid resource scaling using cloud is addressed. In this paper the combination of grid and cloud is achieved thorough a middleware called as DIET. Infrastructure as a Service clouds are a flexible and fast way to obtain (virtual) resources as demand varies. Grids, on the other hand, are middleware platforms able to combine resources from different administrative domains for task execution. Clouds can be used by grids as providers of devices such as virtual machines, so they only use the resources they need. But this requires grids to be able to decide when to allocate and reléase those resources. Here we introduce and analyze by simulations an economic mechanism (a) to set resource prices and (b) resolve when to scale resources depending on the users' demand. This system has a strong emphasis on fairness, so no user hinders the execution of other users' tasks by getting too many resources.Our simulator is based on the well-known GridSim software for grid simulation, which we expand to simúlate infrastructure clouds. The results show how the proposed system can successfully adapt the amount of allocated resources to the demand, while at the same time ensuring that resources are fairly shared among users.
