Cloud-Based Control: A Multi-tenant, Horizontally Scalable Soft-PLC

Event-based control has gained significant interest from the research community in recent years because it allows better resource utilization in networked control systems. In this thesis, we propose an architecture for offering event-based control as a service from the cloud, which not only improves resource utilization but also reduces the cost and setup time of large-scale industrial automation systems. Providing event-based control from the cloud, however, poses multiple research challenges. We address two of the main challenges, which are mitigating long and variable network delays and handling controller failures introduced because of moving the controller far away from the plant. We propose novel methods to solve the delay and failure problems and we show that these methods maintain the stability and performance of the control system. We implemented the proposed methods and deployed them on the Amazon cloud. Our results show that our delay mitigation technique can handle large communication delays up to several seconds with practically zero effect on the main performance metrics of the system. Moreover, the proposed fault tolerance approach can transparently handle controller failures even if the controlled system is thousands of miles away from its cloud controllers.

Architecting cloud‐enabled systems: a systematic survey of challenges and solutions

SUMMARYThe literature on the challenges of and potential solutions to architecting cloud-based systems is rapidly growing but is scattered. It is important to systematically analyze and synthesize the existing research on architecting cloud-based software systems in order to build a cohesive body of knowledge of the reported challenges and solutions. We have systematically identified and reviewed 133 papers that report architecture-related challenges and solutions for cloud-based software systems. This paper reports the methodological details, findings, and implications of a systematic review that has enabled us to identify 44 unique categories of challenges and associated solutions for architecting cloud-based software systems. We assert that the identified challenges and solutions classified into the categories form a body of knowledge that can be leveraged for designing or evaluating software architectures for cloud-based systems. Our key conclusions are that a large number of primary studies focus on middleware services aimed at achieving scalability, performance, response time, and efficient resource optimization. Architecting cloud-based systems presents unique challenges as the systems to be designed range from pervasive embedded systems and enterprise applications to smart devices with Internet of Things. We also conclude that there is a huge potential of research on architecting cloud-based systems in areas related to green computing, energy efficient systems, mobile cloud computing, and Internet of Things.

ABSTRAKPersekitaran awan adalah satu bidang yang pesat berkembang dengan keupayaan mengakses perkhidmatan dari mana sahaja dan pada bila-bila masa. Sistem Kawalan Industri atau ICS adalah istilah umum untuk sistem kawalan yang digunakan di dalam infrastruktur kritikal. Apabila ICS dilaksanakan di persekitaran awan, keselamatan maklumat menjadi satu kebimbangan utama bagi organisasi ICS. Sebelum melaksanakan ICS ke awan, penting bagi organisasi ICS untuk bersedia kerana kurang kesediaan boleh membawa kepada kegagalan dalam pelaksanaannya. Oleh itu objektif utama kajian ini adalah untuk mencadangkan Model Kesediaan Pelaksanaan ICS di persekitaran awan (RMfIC) dari perspektif keselamatan maklumat. RMfIC terdiri daripada tiga komponen utama iaitu komponen pertama ialah analisis kesesuaian, komponen kedua, mengukur kesediaan dari perspektif keselamatan maklumat, dan komponen ketiga ialah pengiraan kesediaan organisasi ICS yang juga akan mengenal pasti tahap kesediaan sesebuah organisasi. Sumbangan utama RMfIC adalah organisasi ICS boleh mengenal pasti tahap kesediaan dan menangani cabaran sebelum melaksanakan perkhidamatan ICS di persekitaran awan. Kata kunci: Persekitaran awan; sistem kawalan industri; model kesediaan; analisis kesesuaian; keselamatan maklumat.ABSTRACT Cloud environment is one of the growing areas due to the ability to access "Cloud" anywhere and anytime. Industrial Control System (ICS) is a general term that includes the control systems used in the critical infrastructures. When ICS is implemented into the cloud environment, information security is one of the major concern for the organisation. ICS organisation must attain a high level of readiness because lack of readiness may lead to cloud implementation failure. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to propose a Readiness Model for ICS implementation into Cloud environment (RMfIC) from the information security perspective. RMfIC consists of three main components. The first component is the suitability analysis. Second component is the measurement of readiness for information security perspective. The third component is to identify the readiness level achieved based on the readiness measurements. The contribution of RMfIC is that ICS organisation may know their level of readiness and address the challenges before implementing to cloud environment.
