Closed superstring field theory and its applications

Abstract: We review recent developments in the construction of heterotic and type II string field theories and their various applications. These include systematic procedures for determining the shifts in the vacuum expectation values of fields under quantum corrections, computing renormalized masses and S-matrix of the theory around the shifted vacuum and a proof of unitarity of the S-matrix. The S-matrix computed this way is free from all divergences when there are more than 4 non-compact space-time dimensions, but su… Show more

“…Our goal in this paper will be to give a general proof of the subleading soft graviton theorem in any perturbative quantum field theory that includes gravity and gives S-matrix elements free from infrared and ultraviolet divergences. At present the only known candidates for such theories are heterotic and type II string field theories [54] in backgrounds with five or more non-compact flat space-time dimensions. 1 Our strategy will be the same one followed in [55], with the difference that instead of the classical action we work with the one particle irreducible (1PI) effective action.…”

“…Recently there has been substantial interest in a different kind of string field theory based on a dynamical field in the small Hilbert space. Such theories are easier to quantize, and provide a useful framework for taming infrared divergences in superstring perturbation theory [3]. Nevertheless, the Berkovits formulation continues to be intriguing.…”

“…If such a theory were to exist we could hope to have multiple dual descriptions which would allow us to study the strong coupling limit of string theory and unify the different formulations. For a brief overview, see [92,93,94]. While there has been tremendous successes along this direction, such as formulating open string theory as a Chern-Simons theory, there is still much that is unknown such as a good description of closed string field theory.…”
