Closed reduction of the traumatic posterior-dislocation of hip joint using a novel sitting technique

Abstract: Rationale:Traumatic hip dislocation is a common joint dislocation. Delayed reduction has been shown to increase the risk of avascular necrosis of the femoral head. Most of the traditional methods must be performed under general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia to relax hip muscles. Anesthesia will prolong the interval between the injury and the reduction.Patient concerns:16 patients presented with hip pain and a leg shortened, flexed, internally rotated and adducted.Diagnoses:X-ray and CT-scan showed acute clos… Show more

“…[ 1 ] Reduction of dislocated hip with prosthesis can be done under conscious sedation; however, failure in reduction and complications related to over sedation are serious concerns. [ 1 ] A technique of hip reduction without anesthesia has been suggested by Zhou et al ,[ 5 ] but prone position of a patient with painful hip is difficult to obtain. Both of our patients were full stomach and were unable to sit due to severe pain therefore, general anesthesia, deep intravenous sedation, and neuraxial block were not tried.…”

“…Most dislocations are caused by motor vehicle accidents and associated with unfastened safety belts [2]. Early recognition and a prompt reduction is of great importance [3,4] because delayed diagnosis may lead to long-term complications including avascular necrosis of the femoral head (AVN) and osteoarthritis [5]. Neglected hip dislocations are rarer in adults, especially in high-income countries [6].…”
