Closed reduction and percutaneous fixation of supracondylar fracture of the humerus and ipsilateral fracture of the forearm in children

Abstract: We treated 22 children with a supracondylar fracture of the humerus and an ipsilateral fracture of the forearm by closed reduction and percutaneous fixation. There were four Gartland type-II and 18 Gartland type-III supracondylar fractures of the humerus. There were fractures of both bones of the forearm in 16 and of the radius in six. Both the supracondylar and the distal forearm fractures were treated by closed reduction and percutaneous fixation. The mean follow-up time was 38.6 months. At the latest follow… Show more

“…The incidence of associated nerve injuries (40%) and of open fractures (40%) was higher than expected because of the severity of the injury [23,25]. Tabak AY recommended conservative treatment of the nerve injuries as spontaneous resolution may be expected [26]. While majority of isolated displaced supracondylar fractures of the humerus are managed with closed reduction and percutaneous fixation, the treatment of a supracondylar fracture in the presence of an ipsilateral forearm fracture is still controversial [7,12,14,15,25].…”

“…All the displaced distal radius fractures underwent closed reduction and K-wire fixation using 2 crossed wires. 2,3,9 All procedures were done in accordance with ethical standards. Postoperatively, the limb was immobilised in above elbow cast with forearm in supination except in the open fracture where elbow spanning external fixator was applied.…”

“…2 Another article reported 22 patients with ipsilateral supracondylar and forearm fracture with 6 patients having radius fracture. 3 Apart from above-mentioned data, few sporadic cases are reported having the above-mentioned type of injury. 6,4,7 K-wire fixation for both radius and supracondylar humerus if the fracture is displaced (Gartland type II and Type III).…”
