Closed or open platform? the nature of platform and a qualitative comparative analysis of the performance effect of platform openness

Abstract: Highlights Internet Platform enterprises have the ambidextrous attributes of transaction and innovation. This study elaborates the concept of platform openness into supply-side openness and demand-side openness with a thinking that platform is an architecture connecting suppliers and users. Demand diversity and knowledge complexity as the contextual variables influence the relationship between platform openness and performance.

“…Originating in the automobile industry in the 20th century ( Steinberg, 2022 ), open platforms nowadays provide digital architectures (such as the California State University website above) which others can use on their own account. Platform openness therefore refers to the degree to which public users have access to such platforms or even control over them: Apple is open in allowing access, but closed in retaining strict control ( Boudreau, 2010 ; Wang, Guo, Wang, & Lou, 2020 ). For open platforms, therefore, the importance of access renders at least a basic form of inclusivity as primary, but transparency is typically secondary as being at the platform owners’ discretion while decision rights are marginal as being reserved for these same owners.…”

“…On the one hand, the adoption of this method allows for comparative analysis across cases from a holistic perspective and helps to explore causal complexity issues, such as which configurations of conditional elements cause the occurrence of expected outcomes and which cause the absence or non‐existence of expected outcomes. On the other hand, as a new research area, it is very difficult to collect samples for platform research, and there is still a lack of specialized databases; thus, the qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) method applied to small samples (Wang et al, 2020) is very useful in this study.…”

“…This work also contributes to the literature on platform retailing (Jiang et al, 2011;Wang et al, 2019;Wang et al, 2020;Wei et al, 2020;Qin et al, 2021). Some studies examine the effects of some important factors on platform retailing, such as the substitutability of two products (Jerath and Zhang, 2010), online product reviews (Kwark et al, 2013;Song et al, 2020), marketing efforts (Hagiu and Wright, 2016), and the degree of competition between platforms (Abhishek et al, 2016).…”
