Closed loop resonator fiber optic gyro with precisely controlled bipolar digital serrodyne modulation

Abstract: A closed-loop resonator fiber optic gyro (R-FOG) with a precisely controlled bipolar digital serrodyne phase modulation scheme is experimentally demonstrated. The serrodyne modulation scheme serves multiple functions in the R-FOG, from reducing the backscattering induced performance degradation to achieving the closed-loop operation. To improve the backscattering suppression efficiency, a precise amplitude adjustment method using a gain variable amplifier and the oversampling technique is utilized to control t… Show more

“…A bipolar digital serrodyne scheme has been demonstrated for the closed-loop resonant fiber optic gyro (RFOG) with a sensitivity around the earth rotation rate [11]. The laser frequency is shifted by applying a stair-like digital serrodyne wave to a phase modulator.…”

“…However, because of the bulky shape and causing intensity modulation, it is not the ideal device. Serrodyne wave phase modulation can also be used for the frequency shift and this method has been studied for the resonator fiber optic gyro (RFOG) 9 . A closed-loop RFOG with digital serrodyne modulation has been demonstrated 10 .…”
