Closed Hollow Bulb Obturator—One‐Step Fabrication: A Clinical Report

Abstract: A method is described for the fabrication of a closed hollow bulb obturator prosthesis using a hard thermoforming splint material and heat-cured acrylic resin. The technique allowed the thickness of the thermoformed bulb to be optimized for weight reduction, while the autopolymerized seal area was covered in heat-cured acrylic resin, thus eliminating potential leakage and discoloration. This technique permits the obturator prosthesis to be processed to completion from the wax trial denture without additional l… Show more

“…Thus, a closed bulb obturator was planned to close the defect in this patient. Numerous methods have been introduced for the fabrication of hollow‐bulb obturators, including the use of materials such as sugar, salt, ice, and putty materials . Chalian and Barnett advocate the placement of an acrylic resin shim, whereas Tanaka et al suggest the incorporation of polyurethane foam into the defect area of the prosthesis to create the hollow portion of the obturator .…”

“…Numerous methods have been introduced for the fabrication of hollow-bulb obturators, including the use of materials such as sugar, salt, ice, and putty materials. 12,13 Chalian and Barnett 14 advocate the placement of an acrylic resin shim, whereas Tanaka et al 15 suggest the incorporation of polyurethane foam into the defect area of the prosthesis to create the hollow portion of the obturator. 16 Both of these methods have the drawback of adding additional weight to the prosthesis, and also adding unnecessary thickness to the hollow obturator portion.…”

“…Apart from this, when we look into the history of bulkier prosthesis reduction in prosthesis weight also have been tried by making the denture hollow. Such weight reduction approaches have been achieved using a solid three-dimensional spacer including cellophane wrapped asbestos, 4 silicone putty, 5 modeling clay, 6 plaster index, 7 salt 8 or thermoplastic splint material 9 during the laboratory procedures which are removed later to provide a hollow denture base. Parel et al 10 and Schneider 11 have used ice, sugar in the defect portion during processing and later removed by creating holes after processing.…”

“…The application of a hanging laminating molding device type used in this study made fabrication of a completely unified hollow obturator model possible. Although various methods of fabricating closed hollow obturator prostheses have been previously proposed 7,[18][19][20][21][22][23] , certain issues remain, such as in the joined part in the hollow portion and the complex nature of the procedure requiring a certain level of expertise. Therefore, a simple method was devised using a laminate-type photo fabrication 3D printer with photocurable resin to fabricate hollow obturator.…”
