Closed-form optimality characterization of network-assisted device-to-device communications

Abstract: International audience—This paper considers the mode selection problem for network-assisted device-to-device (D2D) communications with multiple antennas at the base station. We study transmission in both dedicated and shared frequency bands. Given the type of resources (i.e., dedicated or shared), the user equipment (UE) decides to transmit in the conventional cellular mode or directly to its corresponding receiver in the D2D mode. We formulate this problem under two different objectives. The first problem is … Show more

“…The same result happens if the time allocation is fixed regardless of the network parameters. A similar circular-like mode selection approach is used in [9], where the time frame is equally divided between the uplink and the downlink transmissions and the power consumption is minimized. D2D optimality area when minimizing the mobile user energy consumption.…”

“…A joint mode selection and resource allocation problem in a multicell scenario is presented in [8] and shown to be NP-Hard. In [9], the authors address the mode selection problem of a single pair of mobile users with two dual performance objectives: to maximize the quality-of-service (QoS) for a given transmit power, and to minimize the power for a given QoS. The latter formulation has later been extended to the multiple link case in OFDMA-based networks [10], but the multi-link formulation has high computational complexity and was solved using heuristic approaches.…”

“…In [6], the authors focus on maximizing the power-efficiency of the network. Maximizing the quality-of-service (QoS) for a given transmit power (and the dual problem of minimizing the power for a given QoS) was considered in [7]. To realize the full potential of D2D communications, the mode selection should be done jointly with the radio resource allocation.…”
